Having graduated with a degree in Neuroscience from the University of Leeds, I am to begin my teaching career in Sept 2015 via a SCITT PGCE programme from Kent and Medway Training. I am looking to pursue a career in secondary science education, with a view to progress in to higher management positions including headteachership. I have particular interest in aiding progression students from lower income or deprived areas, and promoting the STEM subjects within a school environment.Presenter @ Science parties for children 5-12y. Engagement of children with concepts of sound, acids and bases, air and polymers in a fun and (somewhat) educational capacity. From June 2015 to Present (7 months) Neuroscience Peer Mentor @ Volunteer peer mentor for the influx of new students to the programme. - Liaising with fellow peer mentors to arrange events for the new students to break the ice. - Being available to answer queries and use knowledge to better the experience of new students. - Introducing students to lifestyle changes and addressing any problems they may face. - Being a source of information if the student has any serious concerns or issues and directing them to available help resources. Requires: Team work, planning, time management, social skills, learned knowledge. From August 2013 to June 2015 (1 year 11 months) FoBSoc Biomedical Science Representative @ - Ensuring communication between students in the school of Biomedical Sciences and their society, FoBSoc. - Campaigning for better provisions for students within my school. - Raising concerns and mediating between students of the school and FoBSoc. - Promotion of social events within the school of Biomedical Sciences, as hosted by FoBSoc. Requires: organisational skills, social interaction, time management, problem solving, planning, attending meetings and liaising with senior staff. From June 2013 to June 2014 (1 year 1 month) Volunteer Research Assistant @ Sept 2013 (1wk) A week long volunteer research placement studying cholinergic and GABAnergic motor- and interneurons in the spinal cord of ChAT mice. Skills gained: - Perfusion and dissection of necessary tissues in mice. - Use of microtome to prepare slices for observation. - Primary and secondary antibody staining protocols* using serums for fluorescence microscopy. * GFP and ChAT antibodies from mice and rabbit were used, and the results compared to assess the efficiency of each type on the tissue in question. - Primary and secondary antibody staining protocols using Enzmet process for light microscopy. - Observation and understanding of results in order to further the research aims of the laboratory and its staff. Current position (Sept 2013 - Present) - Examination of ChAT/GAD+ interneurones to observe how they may be involved in sympathetic and potentially motor control. - Using immunohistochemical staining to observe whether they originate at supraspinal pathways. - Tertiary antibody staining of tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) descending inputs to assess whether these are part of the sympathetic circuitry in the spinal cord. - Skills used : Dissection of tissue, tissue slice collection using microtome, immunohistochemistry, use of fluorescence microscope, analysis of results. From September 2013 to October 2013 (2 months) Customer Assistant @ - Retail sales of food products. - Ensuring stock is kept replenished and kept clean. - Adhering to food safety and hygiene rules and regulations. - Developing knowledge of fine cheeses and wines in order to best serve customers. Requires: Time management, mathematical skill, social skills, working in a pressured environment and to time constraints, development of knowledge. Reason for leaving: Closure of business. From June 2013 to October 2013 (5 months) Customer Assistant @ - Retail sales of food products. - Preparation of food for retail sales e.g sandwiches and hot foods to go. - Adhering to food safety and hygiene regulations. - Communication with head office regarding sales and product information.
