Casual Tutor @ For the past three semesters, I've been a casual tutor/demonstrator for the 1st-year subject COMP10001 Foundations of Computing. Teaching programming to first years, many of whom have never coded before, has been a heck of a lot of fun, and an excellent way of developing my ability to explain technical concepts. (Not to mention shoring up my Python knowledge – you don't know what you don't know until you're asked to explain it in front of a class!)
In addition to explaining fundamental programming concepts, teaching students to reason about program execution, and troubleshooting code, I have been a regular contributor to group discussions with the teaching staff regarding student feedback, course content, and assessment.
In 2014, I completed a 6-week (12 hours total) tutor training program, run by the Melbourne School of Engineering, in support of this role. From August 2014 to Present (1 year 5 months) UROP Student @ I worked on a computational biology research project supervised by Dr. David Goode, under the auspices of the Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program.
The project has given me the opportunity to develop my skills in Python, C++, software design, shell scripting, version control, and simple data analysis.
I also had the opportunity to present our work at the UROP student conference day, a valuable chance to develop my ability to present a technical topic to a general audience. From February 2015 to October 2015 (9 months) Software Advisor (Games) / Storeperson @ I began my time at JB Hi-Fi as a storeperson, accepting deliveries, organising transfers and following up missing stock, assisting customers with heavy items.
Later I moved into the Media department as a Software Advisor with a particular expertise in the Games department. There was significant flexibility in this role, though, as I frequently assisted customers in the Music and Movies departments, as well as helping out at the registers.
In the years I spent at JB, I significantly developed my teamwork, communication and customer service skills. From December 2009 to February 2015 (5 years 3 months) Mathematics Tutor @ I tutored small classes (year 9 and 10 level) at this weekend coaching college. I also taught a year 11 physics class, and tutored one student individually in year 9 maths. My role included extensive marking, and provision of mid-year student reports. From February 2014 to August 2014 (7 months) Editorial Intern (Science & Technology) @ I completed a three-month (part-time) internship at the (now well-established, then burgeoning) web journalism organisation.
Highlights included collaborating on the redevelopment of The Conversation's social media guide, and pitching, researching and commissioning articles for the site. From February 2012 to May 2012 (4 months) Co-Editor of Farrago Magazine @ Since Farrago has a four-person editorial team, this role developed my teamwork and communication skills extensively.
I shared significant editing duties, wrote regular editorials, and took a lead role in graphic design.
Over the course of the year, I collaborated in the selection of sub-editors; running of student media collective; supporting student writers (and mentoring the 2010 editors-elect); and budgeting & fiscal management duties. From January 2009 to December 2009 (1 year)
