Areas of responsibility include Oil & Gas, Bioenergy Plants and Industrial Facility Engineering. Acts as Project Manager on key projects and proposals with technical and commercial responsibility. From January 2014 to Present (2 years) Greater Pittsburgh AreaEngineering Manager and Principal Engineer @ - Provided professional leadership to a team of 10 engineers and designers. Was responsible for the manufacturability and performance of engineered products used in Steelmaking, Ironmaking, Smelting and Casting processes.
- Supported Sales, Operations, and Technical Services on production orders, projects and proposals. Main product range included Water Cooled Panels and Oxygen Blowing Lances for the Basic Oxygen Furnace, Electric Arc Furnace, Blast Furnace, Non-Ferrous Smelters and Alternative Ironmaking Processes.
- Guided efforts in process R&D, product development, manufacturing feasibility, shop testing, analysis and enhancement of product performance, product cost reduction, troubleshooting of problematic processes and procedures, analysis of nonconformance issues for process improvement, and cross-functional design reviews.
- Created workscope and budget for engineering requests received from Manufacturing and Sales. Developed improved tracking system and held weekly reviews for status and priority updates. Redirected engineering resources as required to meet priority changes.
- Prepared the complete project definition of a large-scale bench reactor for experimental work in flash ironmaking. Developed functional specification, detailed workscope, budget, and schedule for turnkey design, supply, installation, and startup of the system.
- Directed, reviewed and approved all critical calculations, analysis and design work including mechanical, structural, fluid flow, heat transfer, thermodynamics, FEA, CFD, material selection, functional control specifications, assembly manuals, and manufacturing drawings. From March 2010 to November 2013 (3 years 9 months) Greater Pittsburgh AreaEngineering Manager, Steelmaking & Continuous Casting @ Led engineering group responsible for Steelmaking and Continuous Casting projects. Had full technical responsibility for engineering project definition and execution. Major projects include SSAB – Vacuum Tank Degassing facility and SDI – Bloom/Beam Blank Caster. Functioned independently on smaller projects, studies and proposals working directly with customers to define and implement various upgrades to Caster and Meltshop equipment. From 2008 to 2010 (2 years) Greater Pittsburgh AreaEngineering Manager, Heavy Industry Group @ Led a group of 16 engineers and designers working on steel mill applications. Developed top-level engineers as supervisors and trained them in estimating, scheduling and delegation techniques. Established engineering controls to ensure a clear understanding of workscope throughout the process. Worked with IT department to automate administrative and reporting functions, freeing engineers to concentrate on technical matters. Efficiency, performance and overall quality of the engineering were improved, resulting in increased engineering orders. From 2003 to 2008 (5 years) Greater Philadelphia AreaChief Engineer, Steelmaking and Casting @ Department Technical Leadership. Accountable for the successful outcome of all mechanical design projects. Controlled engineering processes to ensure correctness, completeness and validity of design. Responsibility included innovative proposals, estimating, design execution, and coordination with other disciplines. From 2001 to 2003 (2 years) Greater Pittsburgh AreaSenior Engineer @ Mechanical Design of Continuous Casting Machines. Had overall responsibility for conceptual design and feasibility, contract design documentation, and design project leadership. Specialized in Cast Floor Equipment and Hotmetal Handling systems. Participated at all levels from proposal through design, procurement, manufacture, inspection, installation, start-up, and after-market service. From 1986 to 2001 (15 years) Greater Pittsburgh AreaDesign Engineer @ Engineering support for Non-woven Materials Research. Led group of up to ten designers and engineers. Designed equipment for experimental processes and pilot lines to allow production of new materials on a trial basis. From 1984 to 1986 (2 years) Design Engineer @ Various small projects in Continuous Casting equipment. Major project Great Lakes Steel Ladle Turret Revamp. From 1980 to 1984 (4 years) Design Engineer @ Started as mechanical engineer trainee with intense training in integrated steel mill operations followed by plant engineering design projects in rolling mills.
