I graduated in 2004 from Teesside University with a degree in Information Technology. After graduating, I decided to start my own business after doing a placement year while at University. I didn’t enjoy the corporate environment and decided to make my own thing happen. It was then I met with the people in the Academic Enterprise department who introduced a scheme to help graduates start their own business. I started up Thap Ltd with a friend, Andrew Paxton, after deciding that two heads were better than one.
We started developing software together, mostly brochure websites (small scale). Adam did the front end, and I did the backend programming. We then got a lucky break through a contact and took on a gambling site for athletics. The company grew to four people, and we won a large public sector contract.
After a rollercoaster ride building the company which included nearly burning our building down with a free coffee machine from Staples, nearly going bust after a customer landed us in it and various other mishaps, I sold to Clicksco and joined the board as CTO.
Clicksco's obsessed about people - bringing the right people into our business, giving them the skills and environment to thrive and allowing them the opportunity to be creative and develop their own ideas within the business. That's one of the main reasons I decided to join Clicksco.
Another was the brands we are building, including ASDA Travel, MyPensionExpert, TravelJunction and lots of others in the pipeline.
Unfortunately we were the victims of a nasty malware attack last year which set our plans back, cost a lot of money and worst, meant I had to lose developers from the team. But, nearly a year on and we're back on track for major growth again. I'm hiring in my team right now and want to talk to developers in the north east and with travel industry experience, potentially anywhere in the UK. Best way to contact me in the first instance is by email tom @ Clicksco.com.
