About Titus Stone

📖 Summary

I used to have a long summary here, but here's the short of it: I solve problems with a mind towards both the engineering value and business context of the problem. TL;DRPrincipal Engineer / Directions Squad Tech Lead @ Served in the role of Tech Lead for the Directions Squad, being a core contributor to both the architecture and implementation of several core services. - Designed distributed service architecture for MapQuest's flagship route compare service - Lead identification of service schema and endpoint design - Primary designer of MapQuest's new transit routing algorithms - Contributor to the engineering, testing, and delivery of compare service. Identified and socialized best practices. - Mentored team through presentations, pairing, code review, and "standing back" - Collaborated with operations team to engineer a robust architecture that was resilient to outage, gracefully handled faults, and was a "good citizen" in the ops world when things didn't go correctly - Collaborated with upstream consumer teams to identify best practices for exposing service features. This typically involved taking feedback about how consumer teams were having difficulty consuming the API and addressing issues in a timely manner. - Worked with the product team to flush out technical requirements for features and advised about where small changes to product requirements might gain a large savings in engineering effort - Contributed to scaling improvements of an existing realtime message-based system; Increased system capacity to ~500 messages/second. - Evaluated and provided breakdowns/documentation of legacy services; made recommendations for how to move legacy services forward with a plan that didn't amount to, "re-write everything." Tech stacks worked on: - Scala / Akka / RabbitMQ / PostGIS - Java / C++ / Proprietary DB Products worked on: - Route compare service ("Eskimo") - Traffic V2 service - Directions V2 service - Exit service - Commute service From August 2014 to Present (1 year 5 months) Senior Engineer @ Contributed significantly to the architecture, development, testing, and culture of the several products for both mobile web and desktop web. Played a technical leadership role, identifying and codifying best practices. Challenged the status-quo through technical innovation. Developed supporting libraries to aid in reducing friction around testing various aspects of the web stack. Championed strong separation of concerns leading to shareable and distributable libraries. Mentored associate developers. Daily work included agile practices such as of pair programming, branching/pull requests, architecture planning and review, test driven development, weekly sprints/planning meetings/retrospectives, scrum board "bookkeeping", story/task writing and estimating, and semi-regular technical presentations. Tech stacks worked on: - Backbone / Scala / Play 2 - Backbone / Ruby / Rails / PostGIS - jQuery Mobile / Java / Spring Products worked on: - Internal API utilized by Mapquest.com, iOS native app, and Andriod native app - MapQuest Local "LoM" - MapQuest.com Mobile Web "MobWeb" - MapQuest Travel Blogs - MapQuest Discover From February 2013 to August 2014 (1 year 7 months) Lead Front-end Developer @ FULL STACK DEVELOPER, FRONT-END LEAD (September 2012) Coordinated with agile team to execute a new product in Ruby on Rails and Coffeescript. • Lead initiative to define and produce the new product's UX and UI • Designed and started process for regular UX "hallway testing" and UX evaluation • Wrote a lot of code in both ruby and coffeescript, working with other developers to establish good patterns and practices • Mentored other developers on areas of my own expertise (UX design, javascript patterns, rspec, etc.) • Assisted QA/Release department in the configuration of EC2 deployments • Established and updated developer-focused documentation ------------------------------------------------------------------------- CLIENT-SIDE JAVASCRIPT: Designed (now 3 generations of) an internal javascript framework/architecture for creating widgets that allow consumption of API's and user interaction on 3rd party websites. Designed and implemented many specialized javascript components necessary for widget development including: • a pub/sub system (including tunneling for cross-document messaging) • a template engine, supporting if and for blocks • a widget-centric cross-browser version of media queries • CSS extensions for performing color manipulation (hue shift, etc.) • a cross-domain POST system which still maintains security (combination of JSONPI and iframes) • object oriented base prototypes to create derivative widgets Constantly re-evaluated and innovated on the above Setup a wiki to document the above ------------------------------------------------------------------------- SERVER-SIDE ASP.NET: • Worked with both ASP.net WebForms and ASP.net MVC • Created numerous re-usable WebUserControls • Wrote ASP.NET code behind in C# and VB.net to hook up to business layer • Filled in for back-end developers, occasionally developing temporary JSON/JSONP API's • Wrote unit tests for Nunit • Developed internal tools to increase speed of development and testing of widgets From June 2010 to February 2013 (2 years 9 months) Titus Stone is skilled in: jQuery, Ruby on Rails, Git, JavaScript, CSS, Ruby, Web Development, HTML, MVC, Foosball, Github, Node.js, JSON, HTML 5, RSpec
