The team and I developed a unique, free-to-view ad-funded service across 16 platforms including desktop/laptop, Android and iOS tablet, mobile, set top box, smart TV, GoogleTV, Chromecast, set top boxes and more. As Head of Video I was responsible for: - Strategy - selling the vision internally and externally - Thought leadership - working with media, industry groups and other innovators in Australia and overseas to help forge a sustainable future for VOD - Partnerships - developing and inking deals with content owners, ad agencies and technology providers - Sales - managing CPM, ad operations, mid-roll and pre-roll advertising, ad volume controls, behavioural targeting, budgeting etc - Distribution - wrangling deals with device manufacturers and running digital marketing - Technology - selection of the correct technology and then prioritising and responsibility for the delivery of the service across all devices - P&L - full responsibility for achieving the budgeted EBITDA for the business From December 2009 to August 2014 (4 years 9 months) Sydney, AustraliaCEO @ My role was to run The Financial Arena stable, which includes the Sharecafe website. The main focus was the launch of a subscription financial newsletter called Under The Southern Cross and make it profitable. As CEO, I negotiated content-sharing relationships with The Australian, ABC Lateline Business, The Eureka Report, BRW and the ASX to extend its reach and it was profitable inside six months. Working with one of Australia's largest stockbrokers exposed me to the investment community where I now have strong ties. From December 2008 to July 2009 (8 months) Managing Director @ Epiphany Media is my bespoke consultancy offering assistance to media CEOs and start-ups. This has included identifying emerging technologies and opportunities, advice on diversification, change management strategies, business modelling and due diligence on mergers and acquisitions. Clients have included DMG Radio, Conexus Financial, Macquarie Radio Network, Ticketek, News Limited and PBL among others. Key successes were integrating Ticketek into Ninemsn and guiding DMG Radio on digital strategy. From August 2008 to December 2008 (5 months) Head of Entertainment and Video @ The Fix is Australia's most popular and profitable entertainment and celebrity destination with more than three million readers and $1 million-a-month revenues. My brief was to take it from the drawing board, through a launch, set and nurture its personality and drive it into profitability. Within eight months, it was the country's dominant destination for news and gossip on celebrities, music, movies and TV and generating multi-million dollar profits. My role also encompassed ninemsn's video business, which now has two million viewers watching 12 million videos a month. From November 2007 to July 2008 (9 months) Managing Editor Online Daily/Sunday Telegraph @ In 2005, I launched the website of Sydney's best-selling newspaper The Daily Telegraph. This included change managing 400 editorial and sales staff, hiring and training a 20-strong web team, developing strategies to upsell digital with print and owning and reporting the P&L. Today, the site has 3.8 million readers and generates revenues in excess of $4 million-a-year. From 2004 to November 2007 (3 years) Assistant Editor (News) @ Key role in the production of Sydney's best-selling daily newspaper. From July 2006 to December 2006 (6 months) News Editor, The News of the World @ Over eight years, I held several roles at Britain's best-selling newspaper culminating in being News Editor with 70 reporters around the world. The News of the World was famous for breaking the big stories. It was read by half the British population and during my stint, it was named UK Newspaper of the Year. Among our scoops were Jeffrey Archer's perjury which led to him being jailed, Gary Glitter's paedophilia (and him being jailed too) and David Beckham's multiple affairs. I was variously a war correspondent, an undercover reporter and was the only reporter ever invited to spend an entire week with Tony Blair and his family. In 2000, I was seconded from my reporting duties to launch the paper's website www.newsoftheworld.co.uk which was one of the UK's largest sites. From April 1997 to April 2004 (7 years 1 month) News Editor @ Ran a newsroom of 30 or so reporters.
