In 1998, Richard moved over to the UMTS department, where he was technical coordinator, and later project manager, of developing a UMTS test mobile together with UbiNetics (Cambridge, UK, now merged with CSR). At the end of 1999, he was asked to strengthen Ericsson Mobile Platforms (Lund, Sweden), where Ericsson's first platform for UMTS handsets was developed. In 2002, Richard returned to Ericsson in Enschede where he joined as team leader of the phase 3 of UMTS baseband development for Radio base stations.
