A seasoned retail veteran with a passion for innovation, Michael Medline’s career at Canadian Tire has been marked by bold strategic thinking, creative ideas and a steadfast drive to keep the Company on offence. Michael believes in the power of sport, is relentless in his commitment to giving back to communities, and is dedicated to creating initiatives that help children get into the game and live more active and healthy lives.
Over the course of his 14-year career with Canadian Tire, Michael has led many of the Company’s most important strategic initiatives, including the acquisition of Mark’s in 2002, the acquisition and subsequent integration and leadership of the Forzani Group in 2011, and the Scotiabank partnership in May 2014.
Michael is driving the Company’s business units to innovate with a focus on adapting to the changing expectations and needs of customers, including being more relevant in a world of rapidly changing technology. He is dedicated to evolving Canadian Tire Corporation into a world class digital organization.
Michael holds an MBA from the College of William and Mary in Virginia, an LL.B. from the University of Toronto, and a BA from the University of Western Ontario. In addition to his corporate leadership roles, Michael is Vice Chairman of the board of the Retail Council of Canada, a member of the Board of Governors of Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame and Honorary Chair of Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame 2015 Induction Celebrations and a board member of SickKids Foundation. He has sat on the boards of Canadian Tire Bank, Jumpstart and Pan Asia Paper Company.

From 2009 to 2011 (2 years) Chief Corporate Officer and President, Diversified Businesses @ Led Petroleum and PartSource divisions and held responsibility for central staff functions (9 business groups) within Canadian Tire Corporation, with a team of 1,500, including Dealer Relations (476 Canadian Tire Dealers running stores with $7B in annual sales), Petroleum Division, PartSource Division (an 86-store automotive specialty parts chain), Real Estate, Strategic Planning and Mergers and Acquisitions, Human Resources, Communications, Legal, and Risk Management. From 2009 to 2009 (less than a year) President, Dealer Relations and Diversified Businesses @ Responsible for managing relationships with all 476 dealers in the network. Also held full P & L responsibility for Canadian Tire Petroleum and PartSource. From 2006 to 2009 (3 years) Executive Vice President, New Business Development @ Revitalized and led the critical strategic planning process. Brought a best-in-class approach to the process allowing the organization to understand its business environment, develop and refine growth avenues. Also held full P & L responsibility for Canadian Tire Petroleum and PartSource. From 2001 to 2006 (5 years) Senior Vice President, Strategy and Corporate Development @ Led the Mergers and Acquisitions, Strategic Planning, Supply Chain, Purchasing, Marketing and Investor Relations departments for Abitibi Consolidated, a $12B revenue company and the world’s largest newsprint manufacturer. From 1994 to 2001 (7 years) Counsel @ Served as in-house counsel, specializing in commercial, securities and sales law. From 1994 to 1995 (1 year) Corporate Counsel @ Served as in-house counsel for Pepsico Canada, the Canadian arm of one of the world’s largest CPG firms, focusing largely on the Frito Lay portfolio of brands.
