How I got Here :) Nearly 14+ years of experience working with Linux, Cloud infrastructures, Databases, Open Source applications, Scaling sites, Debugging performance issues and putting out production fires. I'm a jack of all trades in all things technology. I pride myself on my problem solving and debugging skills and the ability to learn new technologies quickly. How I became a Linux Admin/DevOps Engineer? Watching the Matrix and reading many White Hacking books and trying to get my first copy of Linux installed on an old 386dx2 cpu, brought me into thinking I could be a computer Wizard / Admin. This curiosity lead me into working for an ISP where I started right at the beginning of the internet boom. I learned a lot about networking, DNS, Systems Administration and from there my career took off. Now, I work managing large infrastructures on the cloud. AWS, OpenStack Rack space and I manage things usings Ansible. I thrive finding causes of performance issues, automating things, and just helping my team. I love being a geek. I collect old systems like NES, Sega Genesis, Super Nintendo and my new toy is a beautiful Commodore 64. Say Hello. My Personal Blog: http://penguinlinux.serveblog.net Stuff I do at work Ansible, Elastic Search + Logstash, Python application servers, Java application server debugging, Monitoring using tools like graphite, new relic, MRTG, cacti. Hadoop Clusters using Cloudera, Open Stack and AWS, real understanding and applied knowledge of DevOps principles in real production environments. I don't claim to know everything there is so much to know in the field of technology to be a master of everything, but I am quick to learn and figure things out on my own and take pride on that skill. CheersDevOps / Cloud Infrastructure Engineer @ Returned to Jirafe to help them scale their environment for a large on-boarding of new customers and to help them scale their existing infrastructure and improved on existing application deployment workflow. Major achievements: • Expanded Kafka Cluster with added storage and increased amount of instances. • Scaled our existing Cloudera Hadoop cluster by adding more instance and adding more space to our HDFS storage. • Planned and tested a potential upgrade of Hadoop Cloudera CDH4 to CDH5 • Migrated existing MySQL servers and databases to new updated instances to allow for better performance and enhanced monitoring. • Added automated backups for a Terabyte MySQL instance with replication and Percona’s xtrabackup. • Scaled our web API and reporting API instances using Ansible to increase our capacity and support more customers. • Added Sentry to track application exceptions which has been very useful to debug performance and application errors. • Wrote Ansible scripts to provision our stack on a developer’s machine to help them get a live environment in their workstations. • Increased monitoring and visibility by introducing NewRelic, Sentry to monitor our stack in real time. • Setup Pager Duty for oncall rotation between me and the developers. • Scaled our environment to support thousands of new customers before the 2014 black Friday holiday with NO detriment to our existing users. • Wrote Ansible and Capistrano Scripts for deployments. • Researched Docker and presented proof of concepts to see if we could utilize Docker in our workflow.
