I've worked in education all my adult life. I love working with people, especially committed, talented, innovative thinkers who want to change the world! And I love the idea of working in an education business, as it marries pure education and efficacy with the edge that business brings. I get excited about PnLs, product innovation, market share
I've worked in education all my adult life. I love working with people, especially committed, talented, innovative thinkers who want to change the world! And I love the idea of working in an education business, as it marries pure education and efficacy with the edge that business brings. I get excited about PnLs, product innovation, market share and winning against the competition!
I'd put my career bio in three buckets
1. Teacher, lecturer, university external examiner, children's book author (books I've written have sold almost 500 000 copies), textbook author including for math, English and Life Skills (books I've written have sold over 1 000 000 copies).
2. My corporate career. Here I have held almost every level of job in Pearson from trainee editor, to publishing, to production and design, to running sales and sales strategy, to MD, ending in CEO and Chairman. I've worked in many countries in Africa and around the world. Currently President of Pearson's Schools International Business Unit, I love that I get to work with all the regions and the wonderful talent and opportunities across the globe.
3. The final bucket is government policy work in curriculum, assessment, qualifications and policy implementation. I've done this, on a primarily voluntary basis, for almost 15 years. I've been appointed to several ministerial committees and overseen education policy development in South Africa and several countries in Africa, including working for UNESCO to help overhaul some education systems issues in Mozambique, Malawi and Zambia. I remain a Council Member on the SA Govt's Schools and Vocational Quality Assurance Body for their equivalent of the A levels for South Africa, and participate in standardization processes of high stakes assessment.
That's a life time of education related activities, so to balance that, I dance and am a trained dance instructor, for something called Nia, which is a fusion of dance and martial arts.
