I had the great fortune to work for and be mentored by Frank Helmick who later became a three star general and John Abazaid who later became a four star general. I also received my German jump wings, senior jump wings, and Jungle Expert badge during this assignment. From June 1985 to November 1987 (2 years 6 months) Vicenza Area, ItalyPlatoon Leader @ Platoon leader of 50 man tactical communications platoon (airborne) responsible for the 82nd Airborne Division headquarters. I was responsible for the communications and information technology needs of the division main location. As such, I got to lead a great group of men in engineering in tactical microwave shots, teletype circuits, and run a tactical switch board and patch panel all of which could theoretically be air dropped. I got to jump out of many perfectly fine aircraft in midair like you do and enjoy the serenity of the moment. I became jumpmaster qualified during this assignment on my first attempt (one of only five qualified during their first attempt). At the time, this was extremely rare as two or three attempts at the jumpmaster course was common.
