I am an independent LIS contractor, specializing in Sunquest LIS and have worked with several other LIS and HIS clinical applications..
After 25 years of clinical experience working in all facets of the Clinical Laboratory; from phlebotomy, bench tech, chemistry supervisor, lab management and LIS system manager, I have a solid grasp on the urgency and importance of the lab results which guide 80% of decisions made by physicians.
Then, in nearly 10 years of working in the consulting group of Sunquest Information Systems, I traveled to many labs throughout the country; from the big cities to the little community hospitals, helping with training, go-lives, upgrades, database building, interfacing and workflow analysis & optimization.
Whenever I walk into any new lab and talk to the staff there, I feel like we are on the same page. I have found that there is an almost instant unspoken camaraderie amongst us clinical laboratory technologists. My wife likes to call us “Lab Geeks”. We all seem to have either innately or over time developed this almost annoying (to others) obsession with order and accuracy.
I.e. Are the Quality control results in acceptable range? Is the sample hemolyzed? Is the timing of the blood draw correct for therapeutic drug monitoring or for blood cultures? Is that STAT within the new turnaround time?
We are a group who insists on accuracy and timeliness.
What I realized is how I love visiting cities and labs throughout our great country, walking into a new lab and seeing what I can do to help delivery those accurate results to providers as quickly and smoothly as possible. I am thankful and excited to be working in healthcare IT during these ever-changing times.
Thanks for reading my summary!
