Played a key role in defining its mission, R&D direction, and building team of talented researchers with diverse backgrounds.* Project Engineer (PE) and technical lead for Qualcomm’s R&D initiatives on indoor positioning navigation. Identified indoor positioning as a new R&D direction for Qualcomm Research, developed the R&D and commercialization plans, evangelized it with Qualcomm CR&D management, secured support and funding for the project, and built/recruited the R&D team.* Led the R&D team in developing techniques that accurately calculate indoor location using a combination of sensor information that currently exist on mobile devices including Wi-Fi, GPS, inertial sensors, camera, and maps. Many of the WiFi ranging concepts developed in this effort have been incorporated into the IEEE 802.11 WiFi standards.* Led the R&D team to produce a best-in-class PDR (pedestrian dead-reckoning) engine using mobile phone grade inertial sensors that beat every competing design. These algorithms are now part of almost every single wearable chipset platform from QC. * Led collaboration with other business units within Qualcomm and outside partners (e.g. Navteq and Cisco) to showcase the technology and to ensure successful commercialization of many of the developed techniques on Android devices with Qualcomm chipsets including mobile phones and smart watches. * Project resulted in over 280 patent filings and many of which have been granted as US patents * Led a number of startup projects in QC Research – Silicon Valley including liveness detection techniques for camera based continuous authentication and relative positioning techniques using single frequency GPS receivers and MEMS sensor arrays* University Relation Program Coordinator for Qualcomm Research in the Bay Area. Managed the research collaboration between Qualcomm Research and UC Berkeley and Stanford Universities. Many of those innovations are in the heart of current wireless air interface standards (WiFi 802.11 and LTE) and had a direct impact on increasing capacity and reliability of these wireless standards. My 1998 IEEE JSAC paper on space-time coding, which was the first paper describing a practical use of space-time codes in a cellular air-interface, was selected by the IEEE Communication Society as one of the most influential 50 papers ever published by the IEEE Communication Society. I Drove the collaboration between AT&T Labs and Nokia Mobile Division to introduce space-time codes into cellular air interfaces. I was the PHY& MAC system engineering lead for the team responsible for the design of AT&T fixed wireless access modem technology (Project Angel) From 1996 to 2000 (4 years) Florham Park, NJSenior Staff Engineer @ Qualcomm Individual contributor to Qualcomm R&D efforts on the design, analysis, and implementation of wireless WAN air-interfaces for mobile broadband and mobileTV. Qualcomm delegate to the IEEE 802.20 standardization group and was responsible for drafting many of the 802.20 standard workings documents. Led the Qualcomm WiMAX standard team. Led and carried out extensive WiMAX analysis studies and represented Qualcomm in a number of WiMAX standardization activities including IEEE 802.16 standard group and ITU. From 2002 to 2008 (6 years)
