📖 Summary
Alfred Whitehead said that the “aim of science is to seek the simplest explanation of complex facts.” In 5+ years of successfully tackling highly technical business problems, I have learned that dismantling complex challenges into easily understandable (and implementable) solutions is the key differentiator between a successful analytical project and inaction. - I thoroughly enjoy problem decomposition, research, and learning. - I love challenges: the more technical and difficult the better. - I have a proven track-record of successfully leading and contributing to analytical projects at all stages—from conceptualization to implementation. - I am a natural leader and have held leadership roles as: a TA, athletics coach, personal trainer, and as captain of both my high school and college soccer teams. - I don't care who gets credit. I just want our team to win. Specializations: - Machine learning, multivariate analysis / regression, generalized linear models, hierarchical Bayesian models, mixture models, and experimental design. - Data visualization, data reporting, predictive analytics, statistical modeling, predictive modeling, missing data problems, model-based clustering, optimization, parallel computing, and developing R code / packages (with and without C++/Rcpp). I am always interested to learn about opportunities to solve complex businesses problems. Implemented these models in production using R and SQL where they are used to help identify revenue anomalies and improve forecasting. From July 2014 to July 2015 (1 year 1 month) Statistical Consultant @ Job Summary: Provide statistical consulting to UCLA researchers. We are primarily focused on helping researchers refine their analytical approach and the nuts-and-bolts of their analyses. - Help UCLA researchers to refine their analytic approach, to apply appropriate statistical methods, and to understand and interpret their results. - Clients come from diverse fields--spanning medicine, humanities, and natural sciences--and have a diverse array of both questions and technical expertise. Our clients are primarily working on publications or dissertations; and, we primarily work in R, SAS, Stata, and SPSS. From April 2014 to June 2015 (1 year 3 months) Teaching Associate @ Job Summary: TA-ing provides me a wonderful opportunity to work on my mentoring, leadership, and presentation skills in both a classroom and one-on-one setting. I thoroughly enjoy both the challenges of the role and seeing the progress of my students. Courses: - STATS 12 - Introduction to Statistical Methods - STATS 20 - Introduction to Statistical Programming with R (TA'd twice) - STATS 100A - Introduction to Probability - STATS 100B - Introduction to Mathematical Statistics - STATS 101A - Introduction to Linear Models Sample of anonymous student evaluation comments: - "Alex is an amazing TA. He is very knowledgeable in his subject area. He expands on subject matter from lectures and often explains them in a different manner that will help you understand them better." - "Alex is extensively knowledgeable in R and related coding systems. My question was always answered fully and accurately. Also, his articulacy is awe-inspiring and his patience respectable." - "Alex is extremely knowledgeable in the field of statistical computing, and he always knew exactly what he was talking about. He is the model of what a TA's knowledge should be." - "Alex was a very great TA. He gave a multitude of examples during his sections and even expanded certain concepts in emails after class." From January 2014 to June 2015 (1 year 6 months) B2B Quantitative Analyst @ Job Summary: Chiefly responsible for developing and implementing B2B segmentation models used in acquisition and retention strategies. Additionally. produced numerous analyses, reports, and projections in support of B2B, B2C, and sales objectives and planning using SQL, R, SAS, and Excel. Project Highlights: - Developed B2B segmentation models with $10MM+ revenue potential. - Led project to develop and centralize a SAS/SQL code library across B2B/B2C teams. · Developed numerous macros to improve modeling efficiencies, including: campaign sampling and data pull, identifying and dealing with outliers, calculating value of information, imputing missing values, and reporting. · Led analytical effort to understand profitability of smallest credit unions, allowing us to reduce the minimum credit union membership size that we could profitably extend products to by 50%. · Analyzed impact of test/control circulation on campaign results across products. Suggested design improvements that could be made to decrease impacts of testing. · Evaluated business impacts of new data sources and modeling techniques. From April 2012 to September 2013 (1 year 6 months) Madison, Wisconsin AreaPricing Analyst @ Job Summary: Chiefly responsible for conducting market and industry research to analyze product positioning and pricing; developing tools and solutions to improve internal performance metrics; and producing pricing and contracting documents during sales and contracting.
