Description
Information
The National Women’s History Museum is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to educating, inspiring, empowering, and shaping the future by integrating women's distinctive history into the national narrative. Toward that end, NWHM is working to build a world-class museum at the National Mall in Washington, D.C. – the nation’s premiere symbolic space. Legislation to create a bipartisan, privately funded congressional commission charged with producing a plan for the Museum (including its governance, organizational structure, operations, fundraising and location) passed out of the U.S. Congress on December 12, 2014 and was signed into law by President Obama on December 19, 2014. (Note: The National Museum of African American History & Culture and The National Museum of the American Latino were also established via commissions.) Although women constitute a majority of the population, their diverse experiences, achievements, contributions and overall impact on this nation are grossly underrepresented in the telling of history. The National Women’s History Museum seeks to change that and currently works to raise awareness about the vital and integral role women have played in building this nation through its robust website, educational programs, events, scholarship, member newsletter, and various social media channels.
