L'Arche Canada Foundation

Founded in 1964 by celebrated humanitarian Jean Vanier, L’Arche is a global network of 149 communities in 37 countries where people with intellectual disabilities live, work and learn together. Their caring community fosters their ability to truly achieve their maximum potential. L’Arche demonstrates that when people on the margins of society are given the opportunity, they thrive and we all benefit. L’Arche works to end the isolation of people with intellectual disabilities around the world. The values of respect, inclusion and interdependence shape everything we do. People with disabilities discover their voice and their abilities. The care-giving relationship is turned in its head as those who are supported help those who support them to discover their hidden potential. L’Arche Canada is 29 communities stretching from Vancouver Island to Cape Breton. We are one of only two truly national organizations serving people with intellectual disabilities with comprehensive residential, outreach and advocacy services. L’Arche Canada has over 200 residential homes which 528 people call their permanent home. L’Arche also serves another 800 people living outside of L’Arche homes through our outreach programs. However, through our support of the extended family and through our influence on government policy we have a much broader impact on creating a more caring and just society. In fact, L’Arche is transforming our society by transforming lives – one life at a time.
