City of Pittsburg

The City of Pittsburg is a culturally rich and diverse community of 70,000 residents located at the gateway to Northern California’s incredible Delta, the largest estuary on the west coast of North America with over 1,000 miles of waterways. First established as a fishing village at the confluence of the Sacramento and San Joaquin Rivers in 1839, Pittsburg soon became a major center of the state’s fledgling fishing and canning industries. To honor Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania due to the city’s relations with the steel building industry, its name was changed from Black Diamond to Pittsburg in 1906. Today, Pittsburg is one of the fastest growing cities in Contra Costa County. With planned housing, business and commercial development ongoing, Pittsburg is expected to reach a population of nearly 90,000 by 2025. Old Town Pittsburg recently completed a revival with renovations and restorations for facilities such as the historic California Theatre and the Marina. The City is perfectly situated for easy access to the greater Bay Area, Napa Valley, Sacramento, and the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains and Lake Tahoe. The City serves as an industrial center and has a large, diverse labor force. Pittsburg is also conveniently located on the Bay Area Rapid Transit System (BART) making a commute to cities throughout the Bay Area very easy. The City’s second BART station, referred to as the Pittsburg Center Station, is located at the intersection of Railroad Avenue and Highway 4, which is a short walk to City Hall. Families and young professionals are drawn to the community’s affordable and abundant housing; once they arrive in Pittsburg though they soon discover many other reasons the City is a great place to call home. It has fine waterfront homes, an immaculate park system, a large public school system, and a variety of shopping centers. It also offers extensive recreational facilities, including one of California’s largest and most modern marinas.
