TERROIR was established in 1999 by the three founding directors Scott Balmforth, Gerard Reinmuth and Richard Blythe. The ambition of the practice since then has been to provide the best possible architectural outcome for clients within the given resources of the project. TERROIR is currently managed by four Principals, Scott Balmforth in Hobart, Chris Rogers & Tamara Donnellan in Sydney and Gerard Reinmuth in Sydney and Copenhagen. The central focus of this work is to create unique projects borne of the specific alchemy possible in each situation. Thus, the potential of the project is dependent on how the interests of the client, site, budget and use are fused into a specific solution. The purpose of our work is then to see how these combinations of different interests can be seen not as a limitation but rather an opening up of new opportunities. The result is a folio of buildings that are more than bricks and mortar. We see them as propositions about the state of the world and our place within it. TERROIR was established in response to our perception of a missing link in the architectural profession - a practice specialising in unique solutions for public, commercial and residential projects, small enough to provide dedicated personalised service, but large enough to manage projects of any type or scale. We have found this focus and strategy of significant value in complex projects requiring long term design and management strategies where a long term commitment to a client and project is necessary to achieve its full implementation.
