Don Hoover and Bob Earl founded OCULUS in 1993 with a focus on the design of public space and the exploration of public experience. The practice has evolved over the last 20 years with three interconnected studios in Washington DC, Sydney and Melbourne. People are at the core of public experience and at the core of our work. Our focus is on the everyday routine of daily life rather than on spectacle, style and event. We believe that the design of public space is most powerful when the skills and expertise of all disciplines are encouraged to mix freely and openly; when boundaries are blurred and potentials explored. We believe we have an important role to play in facilitating this exploration. We are interested in the in-between and the undefined. Our work is an amalgamation of urban design, landscape architecture, and architecture. Our process is highly varied; it has a strong base in the craft of what we do and exploration through hand drawing, physical modelling, digital modelling and technical documentation.
