Nederlandsch-Indische Bierbrouwerijen was initially established in Medan in 1929, continue with building a brewery in Surabaya in 1931. The Company's seat was moved to Surabaya in 1936 and in that same year Heineken NV became a major shareholder. In 1951, the Company’s name was changed to Heineken's Nederlandsch-Indische Bierbrouwerijen Maatschappij NV. In 1972 a new brewery was constructed in Tangerang.
After changing its name several times, the Company went public in 1981 and adopted a new name, PT Multi Bintang Indonesia, and moved its seat from Surabaya to Jakarta. Its shares are now traded on the Indonesian Stock Exchange.
In 1997, the brewing operation in Surabaya was relocated to Sampang Agung, East Java, where a new brewery was built. In 2010, Asia Pacific Breweries Limited (APB) of Singapore acquired Heineken International BV (HIBV)’s majority stake in the Company. However, in September 2013, HIBV regained its status as the majority shareholder of the Company, when it acquired a majority stake in the Company.
In 2014, Multi Bintang passed another milestone by building a new state-of-the-art plant for non-alcoholic beverages in Sampang Agung and officially began operation in August 2014.
Today, Multi Bintang is synonymous with Bintang beer, Indonesia’s favorite and most iconic beer brand. Multi Bintang also produces and markets the world’s most valuable international premium beer brand, Heineken®; a 0,0% category alcohol-free beverage, Bintang Zero; Bintang Radler lemon, Bintang Radler grapefuit; a fine soda, Fayrouz; and a carbonated soft drink, Green Sands.
