Materna is start-up Medical Device company developing a device to prevent the damage women commonly suffer during childbirth. Over 80% of women who deliver vaginally will suffer some degree of tearing, and roughly half of all women will suffer from permanent pelvic muscle damage that will lead to pelvic floor disorders such as incontinence and prolapse later in life. Damage from childbirth is the main reason 11% of all women in the US have surgery at some point in their life because of a pelvic floor disorder, and half of all women suffer symptoms by the time they turn 55. Materna device hopes to prevent all of this damage, and lead to an easier and quicker vaginal delivery.
