A Dose Goes A Long Way. Lyndra's vision is to revolutionize the way patients take medicine. Patients often struggle to adhere to their treatment regimens, which undermines medical care, puts outcomes at risk, and increases overall healthcare costs, both directly and indirectly. Patient compliance with treatment regimens is estimated to be ~50% in developed nations and even lower in the developing world. Economists believe this non-compliance creates costs in excess of $100 billion per year in the United States alone. Scientists have been trying to develop extended drug release technology for over thirty years, but current oral formulations on the market only extend delivery by 12 to 24 hours. The Lyndra team -- comprised of MIT and Harvard scientists and physician scientists -- has for the first time developed a technology that extends oral drug delivery beyond one week. The benefits include 1) improved adherence, 2) improved pharmacokinetic profiles 3) convenient patient experience (particularly for populations that lack easy access to care) 4) decreased potential for antibiotic resistance and 5) vastly reduced healthcare costs.
