Our mission is to establish literacy as a value in every home in America. In 1989, Mrs. Barbara Bush pioneered the national family literacy movement, launching the Foundation that focuses simultaneously on early childhood education for preschoolers and adult literacy for their parents. The Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy has funded family literacy programs across the nation, and we continue to explore innovative literacy models offering scalability with the highest possible impact. To advance significant movement toward improved early and adult literacy rates in America, we focus our energy, time, and resources in key areas: innovation, leadership, engagement, and capacity. We innovate to bring select proven models and practices to scale, and we invest in innovation, such as the $7M Barbara Bush Foundation Adult Literacy XPRIZE, that has the potential to disrupt the status quo. Through our social networking platforms, we provide leadership in convening a national movement of partners committed to end illiteracy, as well as increase engagement with Americans who individually, and collectively, can join with us to amplify our message and reach our goals. We are committed to being a worthy steward to our generous donors and our indefatigable advocates. The Foundation is rated at the highest level as a Gold Participant by GuideStar. We are proud to be guided by a thoughtful Board of Directors which includes leaders who oversee multi-billion dollar companies and/or multi-million dollar nonprofits. Our president, Liza McFadden, is an entrepreneurial-minded leader with 20+ years in policy leadership. We share the view of our founder, who believes that family literacy is key to solving today’s most critical challenges, and remain committed to our vision of fostering the opportunity for every man, woman, and child in America to secure a better life through literacy.
