Spearheaded St. Alexius Medical Center membership in Mayo Clinic Care Network in October, 2012. Now serve as SAMC liaison for MCCN.
Worked with Credentials Committee and Medical Executive Committee to revise and update credentialing and privileging process and organized Peer Review Process from scratch. Established Code of Conduct policy and process for addressing disruptive physician conduct; improved nurse-physician relationships and staff morale in general. Created new policies and updated old ones to ensure regulatory compliance and led organized medical staff through successful Joint Commission surveys in 2005, 2008, and 2011.
Created and mentored positions of Chief Medical Information Officer and Chief Medical Quality Officer. These two physician officers have been instrumental in rolling out CPOE, EB order sets, and capturing important data (using Midas and Medkinetics programs) to improve clinical quality and safety. SAMC has 98% CPOE usage compliance and has met Stage I Meaningful Use criteria.
Established 24/7 in-house Hospitalist and Intensivist programs in 2004 and 2006 respectively. On an annual survey, the Hospitalist program has received a 98% satisfaction rating from staff and referring physicians. Currently working on developing a Pediatric Hospitalist program.
In collaboration with University of North Dakota Leadership and Graduate Medical Council initiated Hospital Medicine Fellowship Program in 2012. Worked with American College of Physician Executives to provide learning opportunities in medical management and with The Mayo Clinic to offer a one-month elective rotation.
Introduced new ways to recognize physicians including an Annual Doctors’ Day Luncheon and “Best of the Best” physician awards (voted by hospital staff). Improved HCAHPS scores for doctor communication from 60’s to now in the 80’s (HealthStream) through coaching and mentoring of Hospitalists and other physician groups. From December 1996 to Present (19 years 1 month) Chief of Neurology @ Practice included clinical neurology (adult and pediatric) and teaching neurology residents and medical students.
Started a Neurology Residency program.
Assisted in recruiting neurologists and building a fully staffed neurology service, including electro diagnostic laboratory, sleep lab and epilepsy monitoring. From May 1991 to December 1996 (5 years 8 months)
