Lead Engineer @ Vend is one of New Zealand's most promising startups, offering cloud-based point-of-sale software to retailers worldwide. Vaughan Rowsell founded the company in 2010 and shortly afterward I joined him as the first developer. Since those formative days, it has rapidly grown to a company of over 250 people, with offices in 6 countries. During my time at Vend, my role included:
∙ Developing both the frontend and server-side systems to a high standard
∙ Planning and implementing large-scale architectural changes & improvements
∙ Collaborating with designers and product managers to refine user experience
∙ Peer-reviewing, mentoring and managing of other developers
∙ Advocacy of the company in the industry, both locally and abroad
∙ Finding and interviewing candidates for roles in the engineering team From 2011 to 2015 (4 years) AucklandWeb Developer @ During my time as a contractor, I was invited in to the SKULL AND BONES family, one of the top creative agencies in Auckland, and worked very closely on many projects with them. It was as much like crewing a ship as the name would suggest and autonomy as well as excellence were expected. For the bones I produced both fully-featured frontend applications as well as a number of scalable backend systems offering endpoints & infrastructure for interactive flash experiences.
In this capacity we put a lot of effort into rapidly prototyping systems using a whole raft of technology and I enjoyed the work immensely. It was here too that I had my first formal experience developing for mobile. From 2010 to 2011 (1 year) AucklandWeb Developer @ Prior to Vend, I spent a year and a half working as a freelance web developer in Auckland for both local and international companies such as DDB, Rapp, Colenso BBDO, Federation, SKULL AND BONES, PixelFusion, 62 Models and more. From 2010 to 2011 (1 year) AucklandWeb Developer @ At the digital wing of DDB, a large international advertising agency, I took up arms as a full-stack developer. Translating designs into living, breathing systems. I was responsible for this as well as the deployment, hosting and maintenance of many campaigns. My ability to interpret and estimate requirements for projects was expanded and, working alongside some very clever designers and developers, we delivered a whole raft of campaigns for the likes of Cadbury, SKY TV, McDonalds, Volkswagen and more. From 2009 to 2010 (1 year) Auckland, New ZealandWeb Developer @ PixelFusion is an Auckland-based tech company which has played a key role in developing many successful web-based companies in New Zealand such as Onceit. I joined Craig Boxall and his team in 2008 and helped to produce applications for the Royal New Zealand Blind Foundation, AIDS foundation and more. From 2008 to 2009 (1 year) Auckland, New ZealandWeb Developer @ Contracting for a number of creative companies in Auckland, I learned the ropes of MVC architecture and was able to expand on my understanding of the full stack.
During this time I joined Elliott Kember, founder of Riot, at his former company Iris. Together we produced MyNinjaKiwi, a high-traffic, online gaming platform for KaiparaSoft which was built in PHP with Symfony. From November 2007 to November 2008 (1 year 1 month) Auckland, New Zealand
