He has extensive experience in the top-level motorsports and automotive industries as well as high-precision manufacturing. His passion and expertise lie in setting and communicating the vision for, and successfully planning and executing major organizational change to add function and improve competitiveness. Through the acquisition of strategic partnerships, and by assembling and growing teams of talented, energetic people with common values and coaching them to improve their processes, he has achieved desired business results and become a proven winner.
Over 25 years, Pete has co-founded and managed a startup, built 4 new facilities, and overseen 4 major plant and facility remodels. He has structured, restructured and recruited to build design, development, testing, manufacturing, electronics, assembly and customer support departments. He has led process definition and improvement activities for both vehicle and drivetrain development as well as manufacturing, and managed an ISO certification.
With extensive experience in both engineering and operations in THE most competitive environment, and as the former CEO of a manufacturing company, Pete balances a solid pragmatic business approach with a consideration for human factors – leadership, culture, ownership, and the alignment of peoples’ skills and passions with company goals.
Pete has lived in Ireland, England, Scotland, Kuwait and the United States. He speaks French as well as English, and his cultural sensitivity, diligence and empathy have permitted him to build strong strategic relationships in Japan.

TRD USA is a 250 associate motorsports engineering company and wholly-owned Toyota subsidiary serving Toyota’s Marketing Division. Partnered with two similar companies in Europe and Japan, this Toyota Motorsport triad provides a three -pointed global engagement platform to facilitate the OEM’s participation in motorsports. The mission of TRD is to provide technical assistance to Toyota-sponsored race teams as a means of sponsorship, and to simultaneously showcase Toyota’s technical excellence. Primary focus during this period was the provision of NASCAR racing engines and chassis technology to Toyota-sponsored NASCAR racing teams.

As the Technical Director I had overall responsibility for the entire technical domain including facilities, equipment & 100+ associates responsible for:
Engine Technology (incl. design, engine performance and durability, calibration, assembly, testing, failure analysis and metallurgy)
Chassis Engineering Technology (incl. vehicle simulation development, aerodynamic development, tire modelling, driver modelling, driving simulator development, and vehicle testing rigs and instrumentation)
Race Engineering Support (incl. race engineering and tuning for both engine & chassis, race strategy analysis, logistics and team coordination)
Electrical and Electronic Engineering (to support engine and chassis-fitted instrumentation & electronics)

30 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series wins with TRD-engined cars
1 Driver & 3 Manufacturers Championships in NASCAR Nationwide Series
5 Drivers & 7 Manufacturers Championships in NASCAR Truck Series

SP was a 30 associate crankshaft manufacturing and design company making the world’s highest quality crankshafts for the racing, automotive and aviation markets. It was founded in May 2004 by Pete Spence (CEO) and Gerold Pankl, an Austrian investor with a long successful pedigree in manufacturing for racing and automotive. The company served the Formula 1, NASCAR, WEC (LeMans), MotoGP, IndyCar, DTM, and WRC race Series among others.
Built and ran the company on a daily basis. Held accountability for business plan development, financial administration, staffing, sales, customer support, operations management, supply chain, product design, and quality management.
Designed and oversaw the construction of a state-of-art LEAN manufacturing facility. Researched, negotiated and procured all equipment.
Recruited, trained, and cross-trained 30 engineers, technicians and operators.
Developed a standardized manufacturing process that reduced production tolerances and eliminated typical manufacturing flaws that had previously caused in-service failure.
Drove Continuous Improvement projects aimed at increasing profitability, reducing leadtime, reducing scrap and rework, reducing waste.

Succeeded in manufacturing the highest quality racing crankshafts in the world.
Served THE most demanding customers in THE most competitive environment with super-high precision crankshaft manufacturing, while generating $8M revenue.
Forced one competing company to exit the business and drove two others out of key markets.

Primary focus during this period was the provision of bespoke design racing engines and vehicle dynamics support to Toyota-sponsored racing teams competing in the Championship Auto Racing Teams (CART) and Indy Racing League (IRL) Series. Prior to their entry into Formula 1, this activity was Toyotas highest-profile motorsport activity globally with total budget $150M+
Directed/oversaw 8 departments including engine design, development & testing, dyno facilities, engine assembly, trackside & team support, electronics and in-house manufacturing (total 130 associates including 11 managers & 45 engineers, representing 20 different nationalities)
Evolved organization and facility from an 80-associate tuning shop into a professional motorsport engineering company with 250-associates, and +$100M in revenue (incl. $20M in external revenue from aftermarket accessories)
Recruited experienced engineering talent from around the world (as well as growing it in-house). Personally involved in the recruitment and development of all managers and engineers
