Software Engineer @ IBM I worked as a back-end developer for TSM, which is IBM's backup & recovery product for enterprise storage environments. I worked in an agile scrum team which rolled out new features continuously. The product got its start in the early 90's. Considering how much the computing landscape has changed since then, much of my work involved keeping the product relevant and useable in the current era. One such adaptation I implemented was adding a RESTful interface to our server management tools. Not everyone these days could capitalize on our server command-line interface (for instance, someone writing some JavaScript to run inside a web browser), so the REST API gave our customers a much-needed alternative. Another major change in the storage environment from the 90's to today is the explosion in amount of data that customers need to store (and to backup). In order to handle this increase in data, I worked on a team which sought to improve our data processing speed. I replaced the old single-threaded data processing system with a more robust multithreaded processing system. With this approach we were able to see an order of magnitude improvement in our data processing time. From June 2014 to October 2016 (2 years 5 months) San Francisco Bay AreaComputer Science Teaching Assistant @ University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill I worked as a TA for an intermediate-level Java programming course. My main responsibility was leading one of the weekly small-group recitation sections, where I would work closely with the students to teach them important programming principles such as object-oriented programming and design patterns. I was also responsible for grading & providing feedback on programs submitted by students. From January 2014 to May 2014 (5 months) Chapel Hill, NCWeb Development Intern @ Sweeps Sweeps is a small startup company which enables users to hire college students to perform any task for $25. I worked with a small group of developers who were responsible for maintaining & fixing bugs in the Sweeps web service. I also helped implement new front-end improvements, and worked with stakeholders to prioritize which features needed to be added next. From June 2013 to August 2013 (3 months) Chapel Hill, NCResearch Assistant @ University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill I worked with a professor who specializes in creating technologies which can enrich the lives of people living with disabilities. My project targeted blind youth- I aimed to create a tool which enabled them to explore musical composition more easily. I accomplished this through the use of machine learning- I "taught" a computer basic musical principles based on a dataset of songs, and enabled it to improvise music in real-time. It would determine the next note to be played based on the prior notes played plus a user input indicating the direction of the next note (higher, lower, the same, etc). The project was showcased at Maze Day- an event at UNC geared toward providing a fun, educational experience for blind youth. From September 2012 to May 2013 (9 months) Chapel Hill, NCSoftware Development Intern @ Standpoint Technologies Standpoint Technologies is a local software development company which specialized in creating custom web application software for local businesses. I worked closely with the developers there to test & provide feedback on the new features they were implementing. I wrote many JUnit test cases to ensure all the core code had full test coverage. From May 2012 to August 2012 (4 months) Huntersville, NCSoftware Engineer @ Thumbtack I have worked on various Thumbtack teams doing backend development. Projects have included:- Transactional notification delivery infrastructure- SEO Optimization- User acquisition & retention product features- Inbox & messenger infrastrucutre San Francisco Bay Area
