I am an experienced Head of Technology, Technical Director, CTO, Development Manager, Technical Architect, Tech Lead & Project Director. I have run teams large and small and delivered many projects. Recently mobile telecoms, and now I am a Technical Architect in the Government Digital Service.
I have developed and delivered many software, business & mobile telecom systems. I have run my own companies and the technical side for a number of others. I understand business and software systems at all levels, and can produce & manage project finances.
I can design the architecture & get teams to deliver using appropriate technologies, and I can also roll my sleeves up and do the work as well.
I have an extraordinary broad range of experience that includes some years in the music business, being fortunate to work with some of the most famous people on the planet; then moving on to design, sell, build and deliver systems across a range of industries e.g. Recording studio consoles & computer systems, digital audio, escape system for London Underground, conference & voting systems, document management, NHS systems, digital dictation, purchase ordering & financial integrations and over recent years mobile telecoms.
I am capable of interacting at the highest level, and have the ability to see the big picture, then architect technical implementations. I am known for delivering systems on time and that actually work. I have been selected in the past through recommendations or repeat orders.
Technologies include ASP.Net, C#, C++, C, SQL/MySQL, Agile, MVC, OOD, SS7, Linux, Javascript, MAP, CAMEL, HTML, CSS & Prince2.
I am also gaining familiarity with RubyonRails, Python, Node.js, backbone.js, angular, NoSQL(Mongo), PHP, Github, SVN, & Ansible. In the cloud I have used AWS, Hyper-V and VMware.
Technical Architect @ The Government Digital Service (GDS) is leading the digital transformation of government, making public services digital by default, and simpler, clearer and faster to use. I work within GDS in London and around the country helping government agencies and services embrace the digital now.
https://gds.blog.gov.uk/about/ From April 2015 to Present (9 months) Technical & Development Manager @ In the last six months of 2014, I was the Technical Lead (CTO designate) working with an interim CEO to get a large project on-track. This was being spun off as a separate business unit under the brand name Euroroam, which was aiming to be the first Alternative Roaming Provider (ARP). This was new and disruptive technology, and involved negotiating with and interconnecting around Europe as well as spinning up a complete telecoms stack and the basis of the new company. I worked very well with the CEO ( Simon Murray ) but regrettably, the investment promised by the parent group failed to materialise and so it was time for me to move on.
Before that, I was originally recruited by the entrepreneurial owner of this mobile telecoms group to redesign and re-build a new complete telecommunication system within a highly competitive market for live call processing and sim card billing for resellers all over the world. This included one of the first multi-imsi implementations.
I designed, created and launched a robust system constructed from the ground up, to include live call processing and worldwide billing system using C# and SQL. Produced and developed code for the manufacture and testing of white label sim cards. Formed a team of programmers and used sub-contractors as required. I also used AWS to cut latency in calls in Australia by setting up an extra server in the AWS Sydney data centre. From March 2009 to April 2015 (6 years 2 months) Technical & Operations Director @ Wyldwind has provided bespoke innovative technical software solutions. These have included traffic management systems, time recording systems, purchase order systems and a weather information service for sailors and marinas working with the meteorologist Simon Keeling. From January 2007 to March 2009 (2 years 3 months) Technical & Operations Director @ Initially delivered Internet based Business Systems and then later the company specialised in Digital Dictation Systems
I established the company in 1998 as a vehicle to deliver business systems using web technology. The company hosted a number of web sites and internet business solutions. Examples are:
• A Purchase Order & Approvals System for global lawyers Linklaters.
• “Dynamic” web sites and integrated web-based back-office systems e.g. for the stockbrokers Williams De Broe.
• A fully automated job management system used by marketing companies, an outsource typing agency, and a global wine investment company.
• The world’s first online commercial property auction for First Property On-line
• Complete digital dictation system - in use at Colliers CRE, King Sturge, a number of legal practices and barristers’ chambers.
• Recording software for mobile devices From November 1998 to December 2006 (8 years 2 months) Technical Director @ I was responsible for the design, coding and implementation of an electronic document management system (client-server) and its integration with Lotus Notes and the PeopleSoft system, as well as a purchase order approvals system. Customers included Smithkline, Scottish & Newcastle (Courage), Renault (UK), English Welsh & Scottish Railways (EWS), Mars, Pedigree Pet foods, Tesco, Computacenter, Schroders, Henkel, Johnson & Johnson, Next plc, Woolworth, Walkers Foods, Mirror Group Newspapers, Mitsubishi and Reed Personnel. From April 1996 to October 1998 (2 years 7 months) Software Development Manager & programmer @ I was in charge of the C++ programming team ( at one point 84 people ) and brought to market the windows version of their software for General Practive in the UK. Taken over by Reuters in the latter part, and when I left, we had one third of the UK doctors' surgeries runing this software - I see it is still in use today From 1993 to 1996 (3 years) London, United KingdomSoftware Development Manager & programmer @ Developed shrinkwrap software for publishing products including Database Publisher for IBM, Ventura Database Publisher and Ventura Publisher. From 1991 to 1993 (2 years) Development & general management, and console sales, and installations @ I established this company from the ground-up for an entrepreneur, which delivered high quality mixing consoles to major recording studios around the globe. I ran the company on a day to day basis within budget (initial funds of £500,000, later raising an additional £550,000 through venture capital), designed the console and made the first two sales – one in London and one in Los Angeles. From 1989 to 1990 (1 year) Technical & Operations Director @ Developed bespoke software and hardware for conference systems, hotel systems, digital audio on trains and an escape system for the London Underground following the Kings Cross Fire From 1985 to 1989 (4 years) Console design @ Designed the new range of grey consoles including the TS24 From 1982 to 1985 (3 years) Sales @ I took their sales from one a month to four in month in six months - wanted to be more in console design, so moved to Soundcraft From 1982 to 1982 (less than a year) Freelance Record Producer & Recording Engineer @ My early career was in the music industry where I ended up designing and delivering recording studio mixing consoles and computer control systems.
I was originally in bands playing bass and drums and once played to 2500 people at the Glasgow Apollo. I later became an independent recording engineer and record producer and worked with many labels including Virgin, Rocket, EMI, Polygram and many others.
I have been fortunate to work with many well known artists including Sting, Phil Collins, Eric Clapton, Bob Geldof, Barry Andrews, Robert Fripp, Dire Straits, John Cleese, Rowan Atkinson, Alexei Sayle, The Comic Strip, and many more.
I was responsible for all the audio production on "The Secret Policeman's Other Ball" and ran the entire team for the live show (recording truck and live sound), albums, video and film, which made number 3 in the box office, and Sting singing Roxanne on his own was a most requested track on many radio stations.
