About John McNamara

📖 Summary

John spent more than a decade working in regional journalism in East Anglia becoming editor of five weekly titles with a distribution of more than 250,000. He specialised in business reporting and first came into contact with the nuclear industry by covering the construction of Sizewell B power station in Suffolk between 1988 - 1994. He contributed regularly to BBC Radio and national news papers before joining the nuclear industry to work for British Energy. After becoming chief press officer he eventually became Head of Media and Public Relations for the FTSE100-listed company. He joined the UK Nuclear Industry Association in 2006. The NIA, which is funded solely by its member companies, campaigns on behalf of the UK nuclear industry and some 53,000 British nuclear workers. It has full trade union support and played a major part in getting new nuclear build back on the agenda, and more recently in thought-leadership and nuclear communications, post-Fukushima. John led the NIA on external and membership communications through this period, leaving in October 2011 to join NIA-member company NuGen. John is head of Corporate Communications at NuGen, which is a UK nuclear company owned by Toshiba and GDF SUEZ. NuGen aims to develop some 3.4GW of new nuclear capacity at its Moorside site in West Cumbria, utilising Westinghouse's AP1000 technology. John is an Energy Professional who has particularly strong experience in crisis management, media relations, public opinion, emergency preparedness, speech writing, public affairs and internal communications. John is working hard towards realising a goal of seeing new nuclear power stations built in the UK, and of being part of facillitating a much wider understanding of nuclear power and energy in general. Specialties: Media, publications, messaging, policy, internal communications,Head of Corporate Communications, NuGen @ I lead on communications for NuGen, the UK nuclear company owned by Toshiba and GDF SUEZ aiming to build some 3.4GW of new nuclear at its Moorside site in West Cumbria. My role includes media and stakeholder relations in London and West Cumbria - the UK's nuclear heartland. I also work towards developing NuGen's profile and key messaging during the development phase of our Moorside project. I became NuGen's first UK employee - and helped develop a strong company brand, including naming the project - Moorside. From October 2011 to Present (4 years 3 months) Head of Media and Public Relations @ Head of public relations, media response and communications at the UK's civil nuclear trade association. I headed the NIA's Communications Working Group, organised the NIA's relations with Brussels via FORATOM, and I also chaired the FORATOM Nuclear Information Committee (NICE) for three years. This comittee included nuclear communicators from all of the European and global associations. I also wrote and edited the NIA's publications, dealt with national and international media, and organised the content of the NIA's key nuclear events and conferences.I also led international trade missions in conjunction with UKTI to Canada and Spain - and also led the first UK trade delegation to Japan post-Fukushima. From January 2007 to October 2011 (4 years 10 months) Head of Media and Public Relations @ I led all corporate communications at British Energy plc for more than 3 years during the company's re-structuring and through to re-entry into the FTSE100. I led a team of dedicated nuclear professionals in handling all local, regional, national and international interest in Britsh Energy's fleet of eight nuclear power stations. This role entailed regional and national stakeholder engagement, and responding to emergent media issues and community inquiries. Our team managed local stakeholder meetings at stations including Sizewell, Hinkley, Dungeness, Heysham, Hartlepool, Hunterston and Torness. From May 2003 to December 2006 (3 years 8 months) Editor, Anglia Advertiser Series @ I worked for more than a decade in regional journalism - primarly as a business writer. I graduated to be editor of five weekly titles with a combined circulation of more than 250,000.It was at this time I came into contact with the nuclear industry. With a nuclear power station being built at Sizewell, within our circulation area, it became a major part of our news agenda. I covered stories on construction and wider socio-economic benefits at the time of construction - and some of the protests against Sizewell B. I witnessed first-hand the transformational nature that building a new nuclear power station has on the economic well-being of a region (in which I live) - and would very much like to see it again!
