Research Intern @ IBM T.J.Watson Research Center From May 2000 to August 2000 (4 months) Principal member of technical staff @ Oracle I joined Oracle database server technology, query optimization team at the beginning of development cycle for Oracle 11g release. I have filed 6 patents at Oracle.Project lists (only including projects in 11g release)• Incremental maintenance of statistics on large partitioned tables (Oracle 11gR1 release): Lead programmerThis feature improves statistics gathering performance on large partitioned tables significantly by deriving global level statistics from partition level statistics. In a performance testing on the real data of one of the Oracle’s largest customers, this feature has reduced statistics gathering time on a table with 32,550 subpartitions from more than 1 hour down to 7 ~ 10 minutes. • Fast and accurate optimizer statistics gathering on large tables (Oracle 11gR1 release): ParticipantThis project improves the performance and the accuracy of statistics gathering on large tables significantly by using one pass distinct counting algorithm. The accuracy of the statistics gathered using the new feature is close to that of the statistics gathered using 100% sampling while the statistics gathering time is comparable to that using 10% sampling in the performance testing.• Cost-based join factorization transformation (Oracle 11gR2 release): Lead programmerThis project implements a query transformation technique that rewrites a SQL query into a more efficient format by factorizing common query structures from the UNION-ALL query branches. This technique improves the performance of a large number of Oracle dictionary queries and the workload in data integration applications. Research Intern @ IBM Toronto lab Worked with IBM DB2's High Performance team (2001) and Query Rewrite team (2002 and 2003). • Research on improving the performance of loading relational data into XML format in DB2 XML Extender. From 2001 to 2003 (2 years) Research Intern @ HP Research Lab Implemented a prototype in Java which automatically translates XML documents across different schema. Two patents have been filed.
