As COO my principle function is to develope an environment where staff members can produce customer valued functionality in the form of e-commerce solutions at a profit. This includes the management of personel and facilitating the development of functional structures and processes for team members to work in and with. I also have responsability for building up the e-commerce services structure to help customer businesses to grow and adapt to the market.
I started off at Incordia in a developer/project manager role. From April 2007 to November 2008 (1 year 8 months) Programmer @ Project Type: Software development projects
After finishing my software engineering studies, I was self employed and worked with various companies on short term assignments. From July 2005 to March 2007 (1 year 9 months) PM @ Project Type: Change
Period: 2 years and 6 months.
One could say this is one of the smaller projects I have been involved in, as it was all about educating myself on software engineering. The objective was to learn as much as possible about software engineering so that I would be in a position to tap into the expanding internet business.
Success criteria was to successfully finish this period with my Software Engineering KY degree. At the same time to get a comprehensive understanding of the technologies used in software engineering, as a measurement to evaluate myself I used the certifications offered by both Sun and Microsoft.
This period involved self study and formal education courses. From January 2003 to June 2005 (2 years 6 months) Farms Manager (Programme and Project Management) @ Project Type: Business Start-up, Exploratory.
Start up of an agricultural business for the production of horticultural crops and seed maize.
The main objective was to put together an organisation that could produce the crops. This included managing the processing of the maize, marketing of the horticultural crops and maintenance of the agricultural machinery. Administration as well as field staff were recruited and trained. From January 2000 to December 2001 (2 years) Senior Estate Manager (Programme and Project Management) @ Programme Type: Restructuring and Improvement Programme
Munkumpu Farms had been a state run business that was put up for privatisation. The business was based on the production of irrigated crops, dry land grain crops and beef cattle production.
The following list represents some of the projects that were carried out.
•Rehabilitation of 2500 hectares of centre pivot irrigation.
•Rehabilitation of 4000 hectares of arable land, improving the yields from these fields.
•Rehabilitation of the beef heard (1700 head) and the grazing fields.
•Rebuilding of main access roads and secondary feeder roads on the estate.
•Building new silos and renovating old silos for the storage of 20 000 tonnes of grain.
•Building storage facilities for crop inputs such as chemicals, fertilizers and seed.
•Building of new houses (village complexes) for the local staff (400) employed on the estate.
•Building and managing a school for the children of staff.
•Purchase of new agricultural equipment.
•Training programs for farm and field managers, irrigation pivot staff, machinery operators.
•Health and safety training for all staff working with chemicals, machinery, grain storage and livestock. From June 1995 to December 1999 (4 years 7 months) CEO / Founder @ Project Type:- Agricultural Business Start-ups & Rehabilitation.
Including the start-up of my own farming operation.
This project was to start up my own agricultural business and consultancy in the Mpongwe area of Zambia and was run at the same time as the above three projects.
The business plan for crops was to produce:
• Seed Maize for the national seed company.
• Soya for local vegetable oil companies.
• Tobacco for export and to earn foreign currency. (It was still acceptable at this time)
• Irrigated Horticultural crops for sale in the regions towns.
• Beef cattle and pigs for sale as meat in the regional towns.
I also had an exchange programme with small scale farmers to introduce improved breeding stock to help improve the blood lines of their herds
In terms of project management it is fair to say that the first three years were the main establishment period where project management was the main tool. The following 4 years were more of an operations management role. From June 1992 to December 1999 (7 years 7 months) Facilitator @ Project Type: Sector Development
The principle sponsors for this project were the European Union and the Zambia Commercial Farmers Union which was running the Mpongwe Rural Development infrastructure project in the Mpongwe area and the Commercial Farmers Union based in the capital Lusaka.
The objective was to organise the small scale farmers associations at two levels.
1. Local associations that covered an area where all the farmers could walk to a meeting point within an hour or two.
2. The Mpongwe Farmers Association, where the local association could send their representative, either by bicycle or bus if they were working.
One of the principle community leaders who had also been a minister in a previous government and I had the task to get this process up and running. After a year or so I was able to reduce my input and hand over responsibilities. By the end of the second year I was purely an interested member in the organisation. From January 1996 to December 1997 (2 years) Provincial Manager / Farm Manager @ Programme Type: Sector Development Programme
My principle role here was that of provincial manager and the operation was divided up into the following projects where I took on the Project Management / Business Analysis roles.
• Production of seed crops (13 varieties)
• Processing of the seed once harvested.
• Marketing and sale of seed to local outlets within the province.
The sponsor for the first two projects, Production and Processing of seed was SIDA (Swedish International Development Aid) for all the grain and horticultural crops. The EU sponsored the production of seed potatoes.
The third project, Marketing and sale of seed to local outlets, was sponsored by GTZ the German development agency. From April 1990 to April 1992 (2 years 1 month) Manager @ Project Type: Business Improvement.
This business was located on Lake Tanganyika and comprised of three main business units.
• Aquarium fish for export to Europe.
• Crocodile farming.
• Commercial fishing.
My overall role was general management, and as sub roles I took on the tasks of rehabilitating the commercial fishing operation and Crocodile farming operation.
The crocodile farming operation included the production, marketing and sales elements. Marketing and sales of skins where done to Italian companies.
Commercial fishing focused on making the capture of fish more efficient, then the marketing and sales of fish to markets some 700+km away. From January 1987 to November 1989 (2 years 11 months)
