The Akshaya Patra Foundation addresses two of the most immediate challenges facing India - hunger, and education among children. It implements the Mid-Day Meal Programme reaching over 1.8 million children across 12 States and 2 Union Territories of India. It currently operates in 52 locations that cater to 19,039 Govt and Govt. aided schools. across India. It costs Rs. 1100 to feed a child for the entire school year. Akshaya Patra is the world's largest NGO-run mid-day meal programme. A Public-Private Partnership, Akshaya Patra combines good management, innovative technology, and smart engineering to deliver school lunch at a fraction of the cost of similar programmes in other parts of the world. For many of the children, this is their only complete meal for the day. This meal acts as an incentive for both the parents and the children. It encourages the parents to send their children to school and motivates the child to stay in school. In the process, the child gets the necessary nutrients they need to develop their cognitive abilities to focus on learning.
