Intern @ Interning for Mongabay.org writing environmental news stories for their affiliated news site Mongabay.com. Mongabay is the world's most popular rainforest information site and is a well known source for environmental news reporting and analysis. From August 2015 to Present (5 months) Climate Reality Leader @ Trained in New Delhi, India by Al Gore, as part of the Climate Reality Project Leadership Corps training of 2015, the programme provides training in climate science, communication, and organizing to tell the story of climate change and inspire the local communities to take action. As a Climate Reality Leader, I will be conducting several education and climate change related programmes spanning throughout the course of the year. An earth day event planned for Colombo's Good Market is the first of a series of such events. From February 2015 to Present (11 months) Programs Manager @ The Federation of Environmental Organizations (FEO) - Sri Lanka, is an umbrella organization formed with the goal of unifying environmental and conservation organizations for a sustainable and environmentally conscious Sri Lanka. As the Program Manager, I plan and manage projects varying from elephant exhibitions for awareness to a long term campaign to combat climate change. In charge of all forms of social media outreach including education and advocacy (Facebook, Instagram and Newsletter). From August 2014 to Present (1 year 5 months) Sustainability Fellow @ Worked on a Sustainability Challenge for the DO School in collaboration with the New York City's Office of Long Term Planning and Sustainability. The goal of the challenge was to design and create an innovative and sustainable to-go coffee cup, as well as related infrastructure. As an outcome we piloted a cup-sharing program in collaboration with the Brooklyn Roasting Company, selling 2/3's of the cups in the first 2 days of the pilot. Was the Events Coordinator for Good To-Go, a non-profit company created as part of the fellowship. Good To-Go promotes sustainability practices within the coffee industry in New York City, as well as events that aim to educate the public about the problem at hand. Involved in a social entrepreneurship and sustainability project in Colombo, Sri Lanka starting May 2014. From February 2014 to February 2015 (1 year 1 month) Greater New York City AreaLive-it Grant Recipient @ Filmed and producing an environmental educational documentary about the importance of ecosystems and impacts of potential development in Kalpitiya, Sri Lanka. This ecosystem is an unique ecosystem in the country; home to mangroves, lagoons, rivers, reefs including Sri Lanka's biggest MPA (marine protected area), a national park and a plethora of marine species including three types of dolphins, dugongs, whales and three types of turtles. From December 2012 to January 2013 (2 months) Environment Cluster Intern @ Published a report on strategies for the reduction of the carbon footprint in a specific district within the country. Researched and published a report on environmental best practices of top 10 environmentally conscious companies in Sri Lanka. From June 2012 to August 2012 (3 months) Education Intern @ Conducted educational and awareness talks for the public, worked with children on workshops and camps. Created interactive activities for these camps. Member of the Animal Enrichment Team. Worked to create enrichment activities and monitored animals during the enrichment times. Worked mainly with primates and big cats. From September 2011 to December 2011 (4 months) Business and Biodiversity Intern @ Intern at Asian Regional Office and IUCN Thailand Programme. Worked with the Business and Biodiversity Programme, in piloting a tool that engaged private sector companies in conservation work. Conducted a risk analysis, shared the research findings and proposed a potential action plan for increased private sector involvement in Thailand. From June 2011 to August 2011 (3 months) Staff Writer & Commentator @ Worked as a staff writer, preparing pre game and post games reviews for the website. Commentated on several live rugby game streams, and still helps out in this aspect when back in the country and the schools rugby season is on going. From March 2009 to September 2009 (7 months) Sri LankaCommunications Intern @ Worked on publicity and publications that were used for advocacy and the general dissemination of knowledge.
