My dad is retired and we decide to open a computer store together in Ellsworth Maine while I go to College of Atlantic in Bar Harbor. The store sold grey market Apple computers from over stocked computer chain in Boston. Every year we would receive a letter from Apple lawyers to stop selling grey market computers, the Boston chain would call Apple and make it go away. It seems Apple sales team would stuff the channel to make quota and needed us to clear out inventory. Ultimately the Boston chain acquired our store and I continued to offer development services from Boston to Maine. AS/TA grew to a point that I sold it a larger development company, allowing me to concentrate on a new start up in California. ManhattanComputer Sales @ Radio Shack While riding my bicycle across the US, my then 9 year old brother told me to check out personal computers at Radio Shack . Falling in love with Santa Fe as a resting place I visited the local Radio Shack to find they only had the TRS-80 brochures. The manager asked if I knew anything about computers and while saying no I suggested I could find some folks that do. Leaving with a handful of brochures I embarked on a journey of knocking on doors of local businesses, handing out brochures, my last stop was the Santa Fe dept. of engineering and land management. Knocking on the back door, an engineer opened and asked what I was doing, showing the brochure he then said, "We've been waiting for those, come in." handing out the rest of the brochures to an excited group, I left. A few days later I returned to Radio Shack to pick up more brochures, the store manager asked where have I been, we have many orders for these computers and I do not know what they are, you are hired. Get a suit and we will turn my office into a showroom for the computers. Ok, great. I have a job selling computers. Learning to program in basic, then z-80 assembly I did what I now know as solution selling. I would produce a quick proof of concept to sell the computer. In a month I was the highest performing Radio Shack sales person in the western district, which included Texas, home of Tandy. A few months later, my manager was promoted to open the first radioshack computer store in Davenport, Iowa. My manager invited me to go along, as he had yet used a computer. Once we opened the store we hired ex mainframe and mini computer sales team, not friendly people. I continued to outperform by selling by PoC and my new trick (motivated to get away from unfriendly people); loading up my step van and driving out the the farm co-ops for hands on training/demonstration and sales. Many more interesting stories.
