I am currently leading all external aspects of Outernet, a revolutionary company that delivers free information from space to every human on Earth. Prior to this, I founded a journalism startup in Detroit that launched on stage at the LAUNCH conference in San Francisco and received an offer from a leading accelerator program. I was hired by Quartz to cover the 2014 Indian general election, which was the largest election in human history and took place over the course of six weeks.
I graduated with honors from Brown University in 2009 with a dual degree in Economics and Development Studies. I have co-led a bicycle trip across the US from the Atlantic to the Pacific with Bike and Build, tested fluid dynamics in NASA’a renowned zero gravity plane, studied nautical science and led students aboard the SSV Corwith Cramer, cowboyed and compiled land-use research on the Lazy E-L Ranch, and traveled all over India while studying at St. Stephen’s College, Delhi. While in India, I founded Dabba Radio, which was an online "pirate radio" network of news and current events, a topic that is still banned on Indian FM stations.
My passion is for creating ways for people to consume information and developing innovative models for journalism or other critical media functions. I am passionate about writing, I am a drummer when I can be, and rarely say no to a cheap plane ticket to anywhere.
Chief Content Officer @ Outernet [www.outernet.is] is Humanity's Public Library, the next quantum leap in human evolution. We are gathering the most important information from the Internet and broadcasting it to the entire world from space. For free.
Despite the remarkable global connectivity made possible by the Internet, over 60% of the global population, according to the World Bank, still lack access. Through satellite data broadcasting, Outernet is able to bypass censorship, ensure privacy, and offer a universally-accessible information service at no cost to global citizens.
I oversee everything external to the company including telling the world about Outernet (marketing), communicating our message (PR), getting devices into the hands of users and organizations (sales), and building the archive of what we broadcast (editorial). Any way that anyone not associated with Outernet interfaces with Outernet is my realm.
I wrote a piece for Quartz about my role in editing what gets broadcast on Outernet (see article below). From June 2014 to Present (1 year 7 months) Greater Detroit AreaCo-founder @ Jaunt is an evolution in storytelling from digital and print journalism to tactile journalism. byjaunt.com From July 2013 to June 2014 (1 year) Managing Editor @ I oversaw the editorial component of StartupNation but, more accurately, was working on StartupNation's overall content strategy. From February 2013 to January 2014 (1 year) Co-Founder, Co-CEO, Digital Editor @ Dabba began as India's first independent radio network (Dabba Radio) and expanded to become India's first independent media venture. I dreamt up the concept, created the founding team, ran the pilot, and am currently spearheading Dabba's first round of fundraising, which is being led by Anand Mahindra. Sidharth Bhatia is my co-founder.
www.thedabba.in From January 2011 to January 2013 (2 years 1 month) Deputy Manager @ I was hired as part of Mahindra's Global Recruit Program, which hires 4-7 graduates from top universities (mostly Ivy League) to work in senior strategy positions within Mahindra's global headquarters. The job put me in direct contact with CEOs of various Mahindra group companies and my first assignment was in the used car division. I proposed and independently developed a strategy in consultation with the CEO to integrate C2C sales into their business, which forms a majority of automotive transactions and was previously viewed as a threat to their certified used car business. My work led directly to the company forming a joint venture with Ebay India.
I was selected by Mahindra leadership to lead recruiting during my second year. I then proposed Dabba Radio, my outside of work project, to Anand Mahindra, the Managing Director of the Mahindra Group, and asked for him to invest. As a result, he assigned me to Mahindra's media division while we built an investment plan around bringing Dabba Radio into the Mahindra family of companies. I ultimately declined the offer.
