In 2012 SPAFT asked me to re-join the company as a Director in the Public Sector team. The role involved full responsibility of their single biggest account with Transport for London. The contract was coming to an end and the size of the account required a Director lead to ensure renewal of the contract for another 3 years.
Having never previously worked in the Public Sector the learning curve was huge, however I was keen to use my commercial knowledge to build on the existing relationship with TfL and win the contract again.
Key achievements:
-increased turnover by 18% in my first full year as Director
-existing contract was extended for a 4th year
-contract has been renewed until 2017 with the option to extend to 2018
-TfL previously had 3 preferred quantitative adhoc suppliers on their roster, for this contract SPAFT are the only agency on the roster
While Public Sector and Transport don't sound interesting, this account is fast paced and extremely interesting. At any one time we are running, reporting or setting up around 30 projects and complete up to 80 projects per year. We are involved in several strategic pieces including Boris's plan for cycling, educating children to cycle and travel safely and travel demand management to help reduce congestion across the Tube network.
The roles of Director within SPAFT involves managing a team to deliver all of the work to the highest quality, while also meeting internal financial targets. I report into the Senior Management Board and sit on the Management Board.
A large part of the role is client relationship management. It is important maintain an on-going dialogue with the 26 Research Managers and internal stakeholders. This ensures a consistent flow of work throughout the year and keeps us aware of internal agendas. The client very much sees us a being partners and we are often asked to feed into official publications (some for delivery to the Mayor's office) and work from other research suppliers.
