In this role Simon held executive responsibility on behalf of the IBM (UK) Ltd. board as a named Authorized signatory. Holding full UKI ITS Vice President delegation and acting as deputy and trusted adviser across the business.
During his 2.5 years Simon led the matrix managed commercial team and created a commercial environment and culture that has seen the ITS business grow revenue and profitability in a declining market.
Importantly Simon approach to the role was one of facilitation and problem resolution: he was viewed across the organization as the person who could get things resolved in a pragmatic way.
In addition to Simon’s core responsibilities he acts as a change agent driving business transformation projects. From August 2007 to February 2010 (2 years 7 months) Pre-Sales Technical Executive @ Simon managed a team of Technical Solution Architects with as mix of very senior technical professionals. He operated as a “player / manager” continuing personally lead client engagement in support of the sales teams.
He formed a strong community of over 50 pre-sales technical professionals. Simon led from the front alongside the teams to take ownership of the solutioning for our largest most complex ITS opportunities. This willingness to dive in enabled him to win the hearts and minds of the professionals across the community. . The community that Simon built enabled sharing of best practices to help improve our overall consistency of solutioning and awareness of the new Service Products available.
The Worldwide Global team invited Simon to US to work with them to build the worldwide model for the Pre-Sales Technical Community of Practice. The global team adopted the organizational and operational model that Simon had developed and deployed in the UK which has now grown to become the Solution Design Centre of Excellence.
Simon continued to work as part of the core global team giving guidance and direction. He also led a series of lecture series to build and educate the global community. This was an excellent example of Simon’s international influence and his ability to collaborate with other geos including working closely with research and development (R&D) to promote innovation on demand services. This resulted in incremental revenue for the R&D team in the US. From December 2006 to September 2007 (10 months) Delivery Center Manager @ Delivery Manager for the Remote Infrastructure Management Center.
As the Delivery Manager Simon managed the center
Simon engaged as the first line delivery manager and quickly worked out a plan to grow. He went out on the road with the technical solution managers to meet customers and work out what was going wrong. Leading by example Simon went out to meet customers working with the Technical Solution Managers to change the approach to solutioning and selling.
He found that the offering needed transforming and introduced service management rigor, including ITIL and call management handling.
Building new capability and implementing new monitoring and management architecture and components to improve the capability of the service.
Simon led the programme to deploy the new toolset and adoption. The center started to sign more contracts and started to team with other parts of IBM to increase its market penetration, working alongside eBHS to deliver a combined hosting and management service. The centre started to break even before Simon moved on after a 9 month transformation. It had been transformed to resonate with the market and positioned for growth.
While performing this role Simon also took on the responsibility of Global Delivery leader for ITS and created the relationships to get the service up and running. From February 2006 to January 2007 (1 year) United KingdomBusiness Operations Executive @ Simon worked as the Business Operation Executive for Integrated Technology Services (ITS) responsible for the North East Europe geography based in Zurich, Switzerland. In this role Simon was responsible for operational aspects of the of the $1.6Bn business. It was important to ensure that it operated in a controlled, compliant, affordable manner. This role reported directly to the ITS Vice President, North East Europe, and act as his deputy on all business aspects in his absence. The role was very challenging as EMEA was dissolved and IOT’s created. Project Atlantic reduced IOT staff and left operational gaps in resources and the management system. Simon created and managed the management system, key performance indications and scorecards of the business driving proactive development innovation to resolve complex business issues. Driving focus offering projects and building a shared cadence with Sale & Distribution to drive opportunity identification and pipeline. From February 2005 to March 2006 (1 year 2 months) Shared Services Operations Manager @ Simon lead an integration and transformation project for an IBM shared services environment. Assessing functional requirements and mapping them to the new model including any locally unique requirements. Simon also led the Business Operations Change Management board to drive efficiencies including leadership of organisational change programme, creating management system and governance for the new shared service relationships. From September 2004 to March 2005 (7 months) ITS Commercial Operations Manager / Technical assurance / Business Process and Compliance Manager @ Simon performed both 1st line and 2nd line management positions managing 5 teams responsible for business operational functions. These were Business Operations Support, Commercial Assurance, Process Analysis, Quality management and sales support. Simon was responsible for the compliance stance of the business and process and procedures to support day to day execution.
Simon was responsible for the tracking, evaluation and facilitation of the ITS UK Services Director’s business plan delivering a robust management system that drives the clear business results.
The Commercial Operations Manager ensures that the management systems are both dynamic and flexible to enable changes based on the needs of the business and market trends From December 2003 to October 2004 (11 months) Technical Consultant @ As a customer facing practitioner Simon working closely with the IBM brands to assess and plan strategies for technical architecture solutions across both centralized and distributed environments. Using issue based Consulting methodology to build complex technology solutions to deliver client business benefit. From January 1999 to January 2003 (4 years 1 month) Strategic Outsourcing storage delivery specialist @ Simon worked in an SO account providing mainframe and open systems storage services to the Sun Alliance insurance company, running the delivery of day-to-day operations for the outsourced account.
In addition Simon led the integration and date migration of the Royal Insurance systems when they integrated with Sun Alliance. Simon was selected for this work because he had not worked for Sun Alliance and was seen as a neutral party by the Royal Insurance technical community.
A key part of the role was to manage Royal and Sun Alliance (one of our biggest clients) disaster recovery test for mainframe and open systems. This work continued to include an extensive Year 2000 project to test and prove all of our customers systems – Simon managed the 2 week simulated parallel running in IBM Warwick, and then the storage and data worksteam of the real year 2000 cutover. From September 1996 to December 1999 (3 years 4 months) Senior IT Operations Analyst @ Simon spent 9 years at National Westminster bank as a Mainframe operations analyst working in shift environment delivering mission critical core banking applications / systems. (BACS, SWIFT, CHAPS). He trained as a Microsoft Certificated Software Engineer as part of a refresh of the retail banking network.
This grass roots technical and operational apprenticeship enables Simon to understand a broad range of IBM’s and our competitor’s products, how they work and inter operate to solve our customers business and technical requirements.
