I am an aspiring data scientist with a mathematical background and experience in software engineering, proficient across a wide range of software languages and systems. Having worked as part of a highly knowledgeable development team, I have been fortunate enough to have had the opportunity to learn coding practices such as the SOLID principles and the utilisation of design patterns. Predictive analytics is my major interest, and I am broadening my current knowledge by working toward a Data Science course offered by Coursera (see Certifications for more details). I enjoy utilising machine learning methods to identify trends in big data that would otherwise be difficult to detect, and using these trends to predict future outcomes. I have developed a number of products but look forward to building up a more diverse portfolio of projects, as I feel that the techniques have application in almost every field of human endeavour.Software Developer @ From September 2015 to Present (4 months) Nottingham, United KingdomAnalyst Programmer @ As a member of the Next e-commerce team I have been involved in a number of projects with a focus on developing, enhancing and maintaining the back-end systems supporting the international platform. Detailed below are just a few of the projects I have either driven or assisted with. • As part of a team of 5-10 people, I helped rewrite the international website using a java-based platform with an oracle database, which communicates with a C# and SQL framework. This project allowed for a much more ‘channelised’ approach to an International website, and served as the backbone for further investments into international trade. • Given sole responsibility in developing the competition framework for the content management system. This project allows a user with administrative rights to complete a simple form, from which a competition (or other marketing device, such as newsletter subscription) is automatically created. • As part of a team of 3 people, I helped rewrite the content processing system using C# and SQL to deliver a product capable of pulling in and manipulating content in a fraction of the time. • I took the time outside of work to develop a data analysis system in R that can parse the log files into a table, and graphically represent errors and warnings. During my time at Next, I have been able to work with others to expand and improve on correct coding, following the Agile methodology with the use of TDD, Design Patterns and the SOLID principles. I have also had the opportunity to improve soft skills such as communication, management of junior members, understanding of the Software Development Life Cycle and general business knowledge. From July 2012 to September 2015 (3 years 3 months) Leicester, United KingdomSoftware Developer (Intern) @ As part of my Computer Science degree at Staffordshire University, I was able to take an internship in Munich for Eurocopter GmBH. From this experience I gained valuable mentoring as I helped develop and test safety-critical systems relating to the on-board flight system of military helicopters. • Helped develop a testing console in java that is used to simulate the various on-board computers for User Acceptance and Black Box Testing. • Performed code coverage analysis and unit tests in Ada. It was critical that all code be thoroughly covered by unit tests before being deployed, due to the nature of the industry. Having not known Ada prior to my internship, I found that I picked it up well and quickly became a strong member of the team.
