About Robert Eby

📖 Summary

Member of Technical Staff @ Bell Telephone Laboratories Member of Technical Staff in the Office Automation System group. Responsible for design of the OAS II editor. I Designed and developed the OAS II virtual terminal software used to provide a standard interface of the OAS II software to general trade terminals. One of four members of the task force which designed the basic OAS II architecture. Worked on the requirements and design for the se screen editor (a UNIX-based word processor). From September 1981 to October 1982 (1 year 2 months) Murray Hill, New JerseyMember of Technical Staff @ Bell Telephone Laboratories Member of Technical Staff in the UNIX Commands and Text Processing group. Responsible for porting UNIX commands to UNIX/370. During this period, I was also a participant in Bell Laboratories' One-Year-On-Campus program at Stanford University. From June 1980 to August 1981 (1 year 3 months) Piscataway, New JerseyPrincipal Member of Technical Staff @ AT&T Labs, Inc. During this period I worked in AT&T Research on a team that concentrates on moving concepts out of research and into production use. This involves quickly learning new technologies, developing requirements, understanding (and in some cases rewriting) research code, interfacing with operations organizations, and doing so under schedule. I worked on several projects, such as a controller for BGP route reflectors, some iOS programming to generate some iPhone apps, a project to analyze fiber optical time-domain reflectometer traces using MATLAB, the software for several web sites used in support of the AT&T internal software symposia, and software that used Hadoop map-reduce in order to analyze large amounts of data for patterns. Middletown, New JerseyPrincipal Member of Technical Staff @ AT&T Labs, Inc. During this period I worked on various VoIP products that AT&T was developing. I was one of the principle engineers on AT&T CallVantage, a consumer VoIP product that was on the market from 2004 until 2009. As a part of this work, I helped move the software from research into production, and rewrote it using standard technologies (JSP, web and SIP servlets, VXML, etc.) I also worked on other AT&T Business VoIP products after CallVantage was cancelled in 2009. From November 2001 to June 2007 (5 years 8 months) Middletown, New JerseyMember of Technical Staff @ AT&T Labs, Inc. I worked on the back end software for various AT&T web sites, including www.e-care.att.com, www.customerservice.att.com, www.catalog.att.com, and www.shop.att.com. This software was written in (at various times) Perl, ATG Dynamo, BEA WebLogic, and Apache Struts. I developed software to handle shopping carts, to process and automate the provisioning of orders for long distance and wireless phone service, and to handle availability and phone model feeds from AT&T Wireless. Also worked with external contractors as needed to integrate their software with ours. Previously, I worked on the administration web site for AT&T Business Mail (AiM), using Bluestone Sapphire/WEB. I also did system testing of the AT&T WorldNet Macintosh client software. From October 1996 to October 2001 (5 years 1 month) Lincroft, New JerseyMember of Technical Staff @ AT&T Bell Laboratories I had primary responsibility for the MTA (Message Transfer Architecture) portion of AT&T's Mail Exchange product. This involves developing and supporting a parser, producer, and bridge software which understand MTA messages, and adding features in response to new requirements (such as EDI, X.400 support, etc.). In addition, I had responsibility for software which allows mail to be transferred over TCP/IP networks using the SMTP protocol. This software was developed for Mail Exchange, and was also delivered to UNIX System V Release 4. At various times, I have also had responsibility for libraries which underly the Mail Exchange Architecture. I also worked on Access III and Access Plus for Macintosh software in this period. These were user agent programs for AT&T Mail that ran on the Macintosh platform (Mac OS 6). In addition, I worked on the AOCE Gateway for AT&T Mail, which used Apple’s embedded AOCE software in System 7.1 I then moved on to the MAPI project which developed a Windows95 user agent for AT&T Mail. I worked on the AccessLib C++ library which provided a common platform for protocol, file handling and message parsing for the Windows, Macintosh, and UNIX platforms, and was the main developer of a C++ version of the AT&T Mail proprietary FMODEM streaming file transfer protocol. From October 1985 to September 1996 (11 years) Lincroft, New JerseyMember of Technical Staff @ AT&T Information Systems Laboratories Member of Technical Staff in the Office Products Development Department. I was responsible for the development and support of shared libraries within 3B Office, both on the 3B2 and 3B5. In addition, I supported various programs used for transferring arbitrary, multi-part objects between 3B Office systems in a transparent fashion. I also did development and support of remote login and file transfer applications for 3B Office.Previously, I participated in the planning, design, and development of the terminal subsystem for the OMS II project. I developed code to allow an existing System 85 based forms interface to run on general trade (non-synchronous) terminals. I designed a method to improve character echo performance in forms-based systems. In addition, I had general responsibility for facilities planning and administration, including installation of systems on 3B5s, and ongoing maintenance of software subsystems on our departments' machines. From November 1982 to October 1985 (3 years) Lincroft, New Jersey
