I’ve spent my career controlling machines using computers and striving to get automated systems to be precise and reliable, as well as easier to set up, diagnose, maintain, and use. I specialize in multi-axis motion control systems and real-time software. Since we designed a general purpose machine controller, I've been involved in projects in a wide range of industries. I have expertise in managing mechatronics projects involving software, control systems, circuit design, embedded systems, mechanical design, sensors, and user interaction. I’m a strong relationship builder and communicator. I have collaborated with and managed design teams, both virtual and in-person, across the US, Europe and Asia. Led the controller product line and applications of the controller in general automation. • Led the development of the $4M MCIS project, a high performance multi-axis controller with six built-in servo drives; a collaborative effort between teams in Richmond, CA and Cork, Ireland under the pressure of a compressed schedule required to satisfy obsolescence issues with the previous controller. • Developed process improvements and shared business practices as a member of the NPI Key Users Group; tasked with refining the global process for new product introduction; included members from US, Ireland, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, India, and Japan. • Investigated methods for electronics design reuse across the corporation in a corporate initiative; collaborated with design managers across the US, Germany, Ireland, and the Netherlands. • Managed systems design and development for a cutting edge tool automating welding for offshore pipeline construction; provides greater throughput, greater weld precision and eliminates the need for skilled welders. • Supervised design and development of the controls and user interface for an ROV used to inspect nuclear reactor pressure vessels; improved inspection quality and provided significantly shorter inspection times. From October 2008 to September 2013 (5 years) Director of Engineering @ Berkeley Process Control designs and manufactures sophisticated multi-axis machine controllers used for factory automation. It also provides engineering services, which include system design, custom manufacturing of enclosures to house industrial electronics, and the design and integration of application software. Accountable for software, electronics, and mechanical design, product development and systems engineering. • Led the development of Soft-I/O, an innovative product that implemented configurable I/O; a joint development with Agilent (later Avago) in Malaysia; responsible for the conceptual design, circuit design, embedded software, user interaction and software interface for the product. Soft-I/O is a small networked device with a 25 pin D-connector. Each of the pins can be configured to be a digital input or output, an analog input or output, a temperature input, a power output, or a serial port. Pins can be combined to create more sophisticated devices like mass flow meters or temperature controllers. • Managed development of the Semiconductor Toolkit, a software application for diagnostics and used to facilitate setting up stations and robots for wafer handling. • Directed motion controller algorithm development, including path planning for robots to improve precision and throughput. • Oversaw system development for projects in automated welding, semiconductor wafer handling, nuclear reactor vessel inspection, and nuclear spent fuel canister welding. From October 2002 to October 2008 (6 years 1 month) Principal @ Moy Design, a consulting company that specializes in the design of computer-based systems, the integration of computers and machinery, and the development of Internet websites. • Developed control software for Gnomon, a multidisciplinary collaboration by John Randolph and Bruce Tomb for IOOA and visual artist Tom Bonauro; commissioned by the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA); displayed from July – December 1996 receiving an honorable mention in International Design Magazine’s Annual Review. • Designed and developed tools used to enhance collaboration by more effectively conveying ideas between different cultures; made implied assumptions more explicit. • Developed Internet websites (US-China Educational Institute, Randolph Designs, Dresner RCM Global Investors) • Designed and implemented software for a high speed I/O system. • Designed and implemented software for various industrial projects; dual arm robot, fiber optic manufacturing, CMP wafer polishing, tool for producing reflective tape, blow molding tool, foam cutting machine. From October 1994 to October 2002 (8 years 1 month) Project Manager @ AVI Systems designs and develops touch sensitive screens for computers and general-purpose silicon force sensors; an early developer in designing and selling notebook computers until 1993. • Managed the development of a force-based touch screen including development of silicon sensors, mechanical design for high volume manufacturing, electronic design, firmware and filter design. • Installed an email server between the Shanghai Municipal Health Bureau (China) and US-China Educational Institute (SF, CA) to improve the speed and quality of collaboration between the two organizations, This was the first use of email at the Shanghai Municipal Health Bureau; assisted in the development of cross-cultural training and collaborative tools. • Traveled to Taiwan to oversee initial production of notebook computers.
