Kyoei Gakuen's Japan Discovery Challenge 2006 was a mix of creativity, film making, travel, and education management set in a bilingual atmosphere. The program required that team leaders be fluent in both English and Japanese.
The goal of the JDC 2006 program was to increase the speed and efficiency at which high school students acquired a second language. By partnering Japanese and American students together to create bilingual media, the students used real life projects to acquire their target second language. (Japan Discovery Challenge originated in 2005. It was created by Lorenzo Wyatt )
Each team consisted of four students, a team leader, and one professional filmmaker. The teams had an equal distribution males and females from the U.S. and Japan.
The entire program was based in both Tokyo and Saitama prefecture with frequent excursions to historic cities like Kyoto and Osaka. Teams filmed projects in many locations throughout Japan including: Tsukiji Fish Market, Nikko, Koushien Stadium and Akihabara.
