After a four year stint as a summer associate at the University of Virginia’s Center for AIDS Research, Melinda Gates started her own company, Microsoft Corporation, in 1987. At Microsoft, she worked on a number of products that ranged from software for personal computers to multimedia products. Gates went on to become the General Manager of Information Products at Microsoft from 1987 to 1996. There, she helped develop Microsoft’s acclaimed products such as Expedia, Cinemania, and Encarta. Gates has also been involved in numerous others charitable ventures, most notably the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
