I am presently the Regional Tax Director (Asia Pacific & Middle East) for Gemalto, a leading French Group in the business of digital security. I am based in Singapore. I am presently the Regional Tax Director (Asia Pacific & Middle East) for Gemalto, a leading French Group in the business of digital security. I am based in Singapore. In my current role as the regional tax Director, I am responsible for strategic tax planning, transfer pricing aspects and tax compliance for the operations across all Asia Pacific & Middle East countries. I also provide tax advisory support to transactions on the buy and sell side as also own the reporting of tax contigencies and tax risk management.
I am a Chartered Accountant by education and worked as a consultant for 10 years advising clients on international tax issues relating to inbound and outbound investment structures, contract execution, transfer pricing documentation and defense, M&A and corporate reorganizations. During this period I have advised a number of fortune 500 companies across a spectrum of different industries ranging from energy & utilities, financial services, automobiles to pharmaceuticals and the service & entertainment industry. Prior to joining Gemalto, I worked in the oil & gas industry as Regional Tax Manager with British Petroleum (BP) upto 2009. I turned from being a consultant to being in the industry in 2003 when I joined BP as South Asia & Middle Tax Manager. During that time, I worked extensively with a number of countries like India, Pakistan, Iran, Sri Lanka, UAE, Oman, Lebanon & Saudi Arabia. Later, I moved to Singapore with BP and have worked with their Asian upstream and downstream businesses in the region.
Over the years, I have gained not only strong technical expertise in the areas of international taxation but built up a strong network and practical experience in managing a best in classs tax function of large companies including in particular on emerging topics like tax risk management. I have occasionally presented at Industry & Tax seminars and I love photography & sports.
Tax Director (Asia Pacific & Middle East) @ From November 2009 to Present (6 years 1 month) Regional Tax Manager @ Moved to Singapore in April 2007 as Regional Tax Manager having responsibility over several country tax teams in the AsPac region like India & MESA, Vietnam, Philippines, Thailand, etc and handling special projects across the region – like sponsor for regional transfer pricing projects, open years review, tax training in the region etc. Also a member of the Extended Tax Leadership team of the Group contributing to global tax projects and a member of the AsPac HR Forum for the tax team. From April 2007 to December 2009 (2 years 9 months) Tax Manager - India, Middle East & South Asia @ Joined BP in 2003 as Tax Manager for India & MESA region covering 22 countries and reporting to Regional Tax Manager in Aspac. In this role, I was responsible for Tax advisory support to current BP businesses in India & MESA such as Solar, Wind Power, Emerging Consumers Market, Access to Energy, Thermal Power, Lubricants (including Castrol India which is a locally listed company in India), Air BP, Integrated Supply Trading, Marine Fuels and E&P activities and Tax Advisory services to future BP business initiatives and business development in the allotted region. From April 2003 to February 2007 (3 years 11 months) Senior Manager @ The partners of Arthur Andersen in India joined Ernst & Young and provided continuity of employment to their staff. Hence moved across to EY as Senior Manager and became the leader of the transfer pricing group of the combined practice and handled execution of more assignments From 2002 to 2003 (1 year) Senior Manager @ Joined in 1993 post qualifying as Chartered Accountant and was promoted to Manager in 1996, Experienced Manager in 1998 and finally to Senior Manager in 2000. During this long tenure, worked with a large variety of multinational companies & local companies in the areas of local tax and international tax and advised on tax & regulatory issues relating to inbound/outbound investments, cross-border & in-country M&A transactions, project economic evaluation, project financing, contract & investment structuring, transfer pricing, etc. From 1993 to 2002 (9 years) Articled Clerk @ Worked as articled clerk (internship) handling tax, audit and accounting assignments for small & medium size companies, individuals and trusts. Experience at this firm includes, filing of basic tax returns and managing their assessment, handling audit of financial books, design of accounting systems & all aspects of book keeping.
