watchmaker, sailor, diver, racer, tech enthusiast @ Self Employed Currently exploring interesting things in the world after a long, happy, and incredibly productive stint at one of the best companies in the world. San Francisco Bay AreaSoftware Engineer @ Airbnb I most recently worked on the Airbnb Lux team, on supply tooling. We worked with the Luxury Retreats operations team in Montreal to build tools to make it easy to schedule, inspect, and activate luxury listings around the world. Before that, I was on the Search team at Airbnb. That team owns large swaths of the guest flow, including the home page, the search page, and the listing pages. I was responsible for architecting and implementing the successful transition of the search page from Rails / Mustache to React.Prior to that, I was on the Core Web team at Airbnb, which was primarily responsible for building developer tools. In addition to leading the engineering efforts behind the massive website redesign that happened alongside the launch of our new company brand in 2013, I was also one of the primary authors and maintainers of O2 (née Oxygen), which was our HTML / CSS / component framework in the spirit of Bootstrap or Zurb Foundation. It has since been deprecated in favor of DLS, but I like to think that O2 had a hand in its genesis. Before my role on Core Web, I worked on a number of nifty things, both user-facing (e.g. internationalization tools, core flow pages, user tools) and on the architectural side (e.g. dynamically-processed user photos). From January 2011 to March 2019 (8 years 3 months) San Francisco Bay AreaSoftware Engineer @ NeuroSky I wrote software that took advantage of NeuroSky's brainwave-sensing headset technology. This included various demonstration games and visualizations (in the Unity game engine), as well as desktop apps (in Mono/C#). I also wrote various APIs (TCP, Mono/C#, iOS) for the headset, to make it easier for developers to build software that takes advantage of the headset. On the side, I wrote a number of internal tools, such as a Wiki-markup-to-TeX converter to facilitate generation of documentation, and built the company's website and Shopify storefront with an in-house designer and a PM.It was an immensely creative and productive experience, and I learned a ton. From March 2008 to January 2011 (2 years 11 months) Software Engineer @ Sage-N Research, Inc. I started life as an FPGA designer, implementing algorithms in hardware that matched mass-spectrometry "fingerprints" with potential peptides (i.e. digested proteins).Eventually, I moved over to more user-facing work, building a web-based frontend for the analysis system. Done initially in PHP, and eventually in Rails. From July 2004 to March 2008 (3 years 9 months)
