I lead the Advanced Data Analytics (ADA) team within the Analytics Centre of Excellence in Barclays’ Personal and Corporate Bank.
ADA is a world-class data science team which innovates, designs and builds applications that deliver, direct to customers, relevant analytical content that will help them make smart decisions to improve their lives.
The team is a combination machine learning and Big Data specialists. Because the content is delivered directly to users without human oversight there is an emphasis on software engineering and mathematics/statistics. We build our products in Scala and Spark which are type safe, functional, object oriented and performant.
We are making good progress on exciting and diverse projects that could revolutionise the way our 300-year old institution relates to our customers. The vision is to give each of our customers the same level of engagement and support in planning their finances and their lives as they would have if they were billionaires.
Head of Advanced Data Analytics @ I have built and I manage a team of world-class data scientists
I have developed, with my colleagues, a vision and a strategy for data science at Barclays.
I lead the teams engagement with the business to ensure that our projects add value and make money for the bank.
We apply pattern recognition technology to diverse data sets
We develop Big Data applications in Scala and Spark
We have delvered big data machine learning applications that deliver automated analytical content direct to users, including:
- Automated system to present customers relevance-ranked analytical insights about their business in natural language form. A highly optimised but general big data application.
- Application to identify non-Barclays businesses in card data by combining turnover data, data on customers shopping trips, and lexicographical information to triangulate the most likely match.
- Unsupervised model to categorise complaints from actual customer complaints text.
- Model to predict which customers will redeem their mortgage in the next month.
You can see some of our work in this Cloudera guest blog post: http://goo.gl/iDCkji From March 2014 to Present (1 year 10 months) London, United KingdomPrincipal Data Scientist @ Betfair is the worlds largest sports betting exchange.
I designed and built real-time contextual behavioural personalisation systems using econometric and machine learning approaches, working mainly in Scala, SQL and R.
Products Built included:
* Predict what a customer will do next, used for helping customers navigate to the markets that most interest them. The low-latency model learns and predicts on line, enabling it to respond constantly to changes in market context and consumer behaviour, and achieves an accuracy of over 90%.
* Calculate the fair price for sports betting markets in-play. The system responds to the shifts in player momentum as each match develops and generates prices that reflect match outcomes at least as accurately as prices on the exchange itself.
* Identify and manage high-risk customer behaviours, including collusive betting, arbitrage and insider trading
Each of these systems has the potential radically to impact the profitability of the business. From July 2012 to March 2014 (1 year 9 months) Data Scientist @ I founded Auriol Dynamo while studying economics at UCL to work on data science projects including:
