About Friederike Schüür

📖 Summary

Program Director for Data Science @ From August 2015 to Present (5 months) Greater New York City AreaData Scientist @ As a data scientist at Oscar, I conducted analyses and developed algorithms using MySQL, PostgreSQL, python, pandas, and NLP (nltk) to support Oscar's mission to provide high quality healthcare at sustainable cost. It was interesting to observe the impact of policy (most notably, the ACA) on health care. In my role at Oscar, I enjoyed the particular challenge of working with medical data (e.g. categorical, high dimensionality) knowing that there was a strong mission that underlied my work. From October 2014 to July 2015 (10 months) Greater New York City AreaNon-profit volunteer @ As a DataKind volunteer, I helped organize meetups. As a member of DataKind's DataCorps. I contributed to the cleaning and analysis of data provided by the nonprofit organization DonorsChoose to help highlight teachers' needs in classrooms across the US with the mission to influence education decision makers in their funding decisions. From September 2013 to May 2015 (1 year 9 months) Greater New York City AreaInsight Fellow @ I created drugged-up.me using FDA open data to inform the public about ingredients and adverse reactions to FDA approved drugs using MySQL, python, scikit-learn, Flask, d3, javascript, and Twitter bootstrap. By using a large data set, such as the FDA data, one can circumvent sample biases inherent in clinical trials. For drug name normalization and ingredient retrieval, I used semantic networks developed by the U.S. National Library of Medicine. A Naive Bayes classifier helped me determine what side effects are indicative of serious adverse events. From July 2014 to September 2014 (3 months) Greater New York City AreaPost doctoral research scientist @ Making decisions is hard. We often feel we lack the information we need to determine what action will most likely lead to the desired outcome. In the laboratory, I study how human participants extract information from their environment and learn those parameters that are relevant to the decisions that they have to make. I construct models of optimal performance and then compare human behavior, probed by carefully designed laboratory experiments, to these optimal observer models (using Maximum Likelihood techniques, Bayesian statistics). This comparison allows me to find deviations from optimal performance and possible explanations for such suboptimal performance. The goal of this research is to explain and - hopefully - prevent human suboptimal decision making in the world outside the laboratory. From December 2011 to September 2014 (2 years 10 months) Graduate Student Researcher @ From September 2008 to May 2012 (3 years 9 months) London, United KingdomChair @ I acted as chair of a housing co-op with the mission to provide low cost housing to students or other low income populations. I organised regular meetings, discussed and approved construction plans, and applied for loans and other funding on behalf of the organisation. From September 2006 to September 2007 (1 year 1 month) Nijmegen Area, NetherlandsIntern @ My first exposure to science fresh from high school. I programmed an experiment on categorical perception of faces by gender in E-prime, collected the data, and computed descriptive statistics in excel. I furthermore contributed to their faces database. From March 2003 to July 2003 (5 months) Tübingen Area, GermanyMember of opera choir @ I sang in this theatre's children's choir then opera choir. I participated in rehearsals and performances for 10+ productions ranging from the Flying Dutchman to My Fair Lady. From August 1998 to August 2001 (3 years 1 month) Doctor of Philosophy (PhD), Cognitive Neuroscience @ University College London, U. of London From 2008 to 2012 Master of Arts (MA), Philosophy / Logic, cum laude @ Radboud Universiteit Nijmegen From 2007 to 2009 Master of Science (MSc), Cognitive Science, summa cum laude @ Radboud Universiteit Nijmegen From 2007 to 2008 Bachelor of Arts (BA), Philosophy, cum laude @ Radboud Universiteit Nijmegen From 2004 to 2007 Bachelor of Science (BSc), Cognitive Science, cum laude @ Radboud Universiteit Nijmegen From 2003 to 2006 Studium Generale @ Leibniz Kolleg From 2002 to 2003 Abitur, Math, Chemistry @ Wilhelm-Raabe-Schule Lüneburg From 1995 to 2001 Friederike Schüür is skilled in: Statistics, Research, Matlab, Data Analysis, R, Science, Academic Writing, Python, Scientific Writing, Psychology, Mathematical Modeling, Machine Learning, Experimental Design, Neuroscience, Decision Making
