Over thirty years of civil and structural engineering with an emphasis on wood construction, sustainable practices, and collaborative project management. Along with a partner I hold patents in a new construction technology, AVAVA Systems, that takes advantage of the mechanical properties of modern engineered wood products to create large open structures with the smallest possible carbon footprint.
Managing Member @ Currently manufacturing and selling small prefabricated and modular structures for back yards, communities, and pop-up opportunities to be used as guest houses, studios, offices, stores, and green houses. Founded in 2006, AVAVA Systems began with the idea that the wood framed construction industry was out of antiquated and due for modernizing. David and his partner, Michael Kozel, invented and patented a new way to connect engineered lumber I-joists to create light wood moment frames that are easily assembled with little more than wrenches and battery powered screwdrivers. The concept was proof tested at Burning Man in 2006 with a 20-foot cube-shaped open-ended structure that served as a giant canvas and viewing platform 25-feet above the ground for the event participants.
David has also used the AVAVA System technology to design and construct a third story addition to his house that is his 500 square foot master suite with a roof deck in the Berkeley Hills. No he and his most recent partners including Benjamin Kimmich and Patricia Carpentieri are moving from prototype backyard structures to production models that range in size from 120 square feet to 480 square feet and come complete with high quality windows, doors, bathrooms, and kitchens. From 2006 to Present (9 years) Principal Engineer @ • Manage San Francisco office with 8 full time employees, including responsible charge of 7 professional civil and structural engineers.
• Principal engineer and project manager on structural engineering design projects using all construction materials including wood, concrete, steel, and masonry. Directly responsible for annual revenues of $750,000 in fees and approximately 50 unique engineering projects per year (on average). Projects ranged from residential and commercial improvements to industrial and public works projects including the Illinois Street Intermodal Bridge in San Francisco, Santa Clara Valley Medical Center Seismic Retrofit of Old Main Hospital, West Oakland BART Station Seismic Upgrades, and the SFIA Viaduct Seismic Improvements.
• Develop business and various markets to obtain new clients including Port of San Francisco: On-call Contracts (9-years total), BART: Seismic Safety Program, Hitachi: San Jose, XOMA: Berkeley, and Yosemite National Park. Successfully maintain long-term business relationships with returning clients over twenty-five years in the private sector.
• Responsible for all aspects of project management through full project life cycle, from conceptual design and feasibility study to design development and construction related engineering services including project closeout. Prepared and maintained project budgets, schedules, construction cost estimates, value engineering studies, condition assessment surveys, monthly progress reports and invoices (including government reporting documents). Managed contract and subcontract negotiations, safety programs, and QA/QC process on major projects.
• Recruit, supervise, and mentor civil and structural engineers.
• Coordinate and manage large design teams that include mechanical, electrical, coastal, geotechnical, and architectural consultants along with specialty consultants such as inspectors, bridge, rail, preservation architects, and surveyors. From July 1999 to January 2015 (15 years 7 months)
