While I was working for Intel as an engineer back in 2002, I started my first business with Michael Kanko. We imported a variety of goods (steam showers, wood chippers, backhoes, bathtubs, toilets, furniture) from China and sold them on eBay, and later branded websites. I'm proud to say that we've done over $100 million in sales.

Running an importing business gave Mike and me the idea to start importgenius.com, which we did with my brother, Ryan Petersen. Import Genius quickly became the world's leading provider of international trade data, and our customers include Fortune 50 companies, hedge funds, importers, factories, journalists, lawyers, and more. After running ImportGenius for a few years, I started BuildZoom.com to solve a very different problem, remodeling homes, using a similar approach. Both businesses are based around making sense out of huge amounts of unstructured data.
I now run BuildZoom with my childhood friend, Jiyan Wei. Currently around 40,000 people/day use it to research contractors.
I advise Flexport.com, a startup founded by my brother, Ryan Petersen. Flexport uses software to solve many of the operational problems we faced as importers.
I'm happy to report that the combined businesses, which we maintain full control of, employee 200 people around the world. They are all growing, so I can't wait to see what the future holds.
I have invested in 50 startup seed rounds (Zenefits, Padlet, Medisas!), a bar (oops), and a nail salon (Teres Nail Bar, going strong!), and hope to invest in another 75 before it's all over.
Finally, shout out to Formation 8, Joe Lonsdale, and Drew Oetting for being the most entrepreneur friendly investors in SV.
