Assistant Quantity Surveyor @ I am currently working on the Highways Maintenance Contract for Bedford Councils (local government) South Bedfordshire, Mid Bedfordshire & Bedford Borough. I am to assist in the measurement & valuation of the works to deliver contractual entitlement. To support the necessary activities to provide accurate cost capture, eg) Measuring labour time, Vehicle & plant, Potholes, Patches, Traffic Management, Emergency call outs etc.. I also have to ensure all data captured is fed back into the business to inform future bids & to assist the Commercial team in carrying out their normal commercial and contractual duties, assisting the operational management team as required, and ensuring maximum recovery of all contractual entitlement. I work within strict deadlines required under contract(s) as required by the company, support in preparing data to populate various commercial reports. To support the commercial team in exercising full cost control of project(s) in conjunction with the Commercial manager as directed. Assist in producing monthly and weekly cost and value data to support the Commercial team in production of forecasts to completion of projects. Assist in the collation of data/facts with respect of all variations (changes) to the works in conjunction with other project team members. Ensure that all contemporary records are kept by the project team members for use in supporting claims, extensions of time, and the evaluation of variations. Support the Commercial team in all aspects of subcontract procurement & payment. Assist the Commercial team in submitting in a timely manner applications for payment, Change requests and any additional contractual requirements. At present I am training to estimate for VXO works and to completely take over all works that come through the OCR that range below the £50k threshold to release the main QS so he can concentrate on larger Schemes & works in excess of the £50k threshold.

I was learning the tendering documentation and process and to price BOQ (Bills of quantities). I was Processing & documenting invoices & ensuring we were not being overcharged by suppliers and then submitting credit notes to claim the overcharged money back. I would also be calling QS teams for Main Contractors chasing payments for work by phone or email. I was in charge of gaining all information for New Sub-contractors to create personnel files for each member of staff. I had to check, organise, separate, and print drawings from clients distributing to Contracts Manager/Supervisors. General duties: Data entry/filing documents, Meeting preparation, Input Materials & Wages data onto master valuations for each specific project. Visit sites for progress checks when required. Analysis of data/information. Draft letters/emails to clients and suppliers. Copying drawings sent/emailed in from main contractors/clients so to be sure that the originals get sent back to the client in perfect condition. I would visibly scan each scaled Drawings for products highlighting the things needed that were in clients specification, such as rockwool, crown, celotex insulation or blockwork type such as celcon solar or thermalite etc. Highlight drawings to mark out new masonry, studwork, drainage, new openings etc. I then take off measurements from the drawings & manually calculate costs & enter on cost systems. once all information has been taken off and has been inputted, I would find product codes on a system called wintegrate & correct the products to the spec accordingly for example finding specific codes for floor, roof and cavity insulation. We price as many products as possible listed on the specification and plans. We couldnt price for any steel beams but then include Limitations, Exclusions and Scope of works at the end of the quotation. System used Citrix Stripe, 4Projects. Collecting post from existing main reception, date stamping all mail, distributing mail to whom it may concern (Q.S, project management team etc..), Filing all documents appropriately, maintaining a current list of up-to-date drawings in a file for easy access to on site team, filing drawings and providing copies to on site team as required. Space planning was important and making amendments to working drawings and planning permission applications. Filing, printing and copying drawings was a must! Production meetings with companies to discuss what deals and materials they can offer and have previously offered the company such as floor, ceiling tiles, doors, windows etc.. Minimal constructional detail for windows and doors with manufacturer’s information. Whilst in this employment I was Drawing, organising and designing all shop unitry for large retail chains e.g., Harrods, H Samuels, Ernest Jones and Leslie Davis for shop re-fit. I also had to compile orders and input part-numbers on invoices for parts to fix the unitry together for the shop fitters/carpenters & CNC millers on the shop floor.
